Welcome to the web site of Cortijo la Suerte, a charming holiday home in the Alpujarras region of Andalucia in southern Spain. You can relax in the tranquillity of the house and its surroundings, enjoy the pretty local village of  Pitres (click on this link to find Pitres on the map of Spain), visit the six neighbouring villages, wander through the rustic farmland and trek the rugged hillsides.

We have made this web site to tell you about Cortijo la Suerte – what to expect, what to do, and how to arrange a stay in this superb and unspoiled environment. Please contact us if you have any questions, to tell us what you think of this site, and to arrange your holiday in Las Alpujarras.

Cortijo la Suerte provides comfort, simplicity and privacy, and gives our guests an authentic experience of Spanish rural life. A “cortijo” is a small farm, or farmhouse. “Suerte” means luck, chance, fate or good fortune. It was our good fortune (or perhaps fate) to acquire this rustic farmhouse, and we hope that you will be fortunate enough to visit Cortijo la Suerte.

The Cortíjo has been built fifteen years ago and recently an extra floor and an annex have been added. With two double bedrooms, one twin bedroom and three bathrooms with toilet it is ideally suited for six people. The large swimming pool is exclusively for your own use. The neighbours are farmers on the surrounding fields.

It is situated on the slopes of the Sierra Nevada at an altitude of approximately 1200 metres.  It is a typical house in 'the campo' where nature lovers can enjoy the quiet country atmosphere. The Jacuzzi, central heating in the living room and floor heating in the main bedrooms are luxuries that add to the rural living style. So don't expect a luxurious holiday mansion but enjoy the beauty and quietness of the mountain countryside, where you can be completely on your own.

The walk to the village of Pitres is about fifteen minutes (five minutes by car) and  in twenty minutes you can walk to the village Mecina.

A Cortíjo is literally a farmhouse, and that is where Cortíjo La Suerte originates from. It lies in a Natural Park where it is not allowed to build new houses outside the villages. There is a large area of land and a garden that can be enjoyed by everyone.

Living in “el campo” without mains electricity, gas or water can be harsh, so we have installed solar cells, a silenced generator and a central gas system. Water comes from our own spring and is excellent.

We have to ask you to check that the place is suitable for your children. The pool is partly unfenced and the terrain is steep in places, so children should be swimmers and old enough to play around in safety, or else be under constant supervision.

Description:

The upper floor has one large double bedroom with a washstand and a smaller twin bedroom. There is a bathroom with a bath, toilet and washstand. There is floor heating for cold times. Two double doors of the main bedroom open into large terraces of which one has an open fire for barbecue. Both terraces have stunning views over the mountains. The bedrooms have sufficient wardrobes.

Stairs lead down to the living room and the main bathroom with a shower, wash stand and a toilet. It is "a room with a view": while showering you can admire the view over the valley and the mountains.

The swimming pool is L-shaped and measures 7.20 meters by 3.90 meters plus 4.00 meters by 1.80 meters.  The total water capacity is 65 cubic meters.

The pool is deep: between 1.50 and 2.20 meters and not fenced. Children should be able to swim and parental guidance is a necessity at all times.

The annex is next to the swimming pool and is a little separate apartment with a nice  terrace hidden between the fruit trees with beautiful views over the valley. It has a double bedroom with a small bathroom with shower and wash stand and a romantic toilet outside.

Next to this little apartment is the tool shed. The roof of the shed is the terrace for the swimming pool. The main pool terrace is at pool level.

Pitres in the Alpujarra

Pitres is situated between Pampaneira and Trevelez. It is just as pretty but less touristy. In the valley below there are five hamlets - Mecina, Mecinilla, Fondales, Ferreirola and Atalbeitar, all grouped with Pitres in the municipality called la Taha. It is fascinating to explore the surroundings on an altitude of over 1200 meters, with ancient paths though beautiful woodlands and the tinkling sound of running water. Pitres has appoximately 800 inhabitants.

From several places there are views over the sea, on top of in general stunning views. Pitres has a supermarket, a pharmacy, two pubs with terraces in the central market place.

The environment

The environment is a wonderful hiking area and it is possible to wander for hours in beautiful nature with only the sounds of nature. The village is situated in a ‘park natural’, that is bordered on the ‘National Park the Sierra Nevada’. There are old paths leading to other villages or old places like Roman churches. The Mediterranean mountains (with many almond- and olive trees) are full of variation.

The mountain rivers and the sea offer to bath and swim on many places. The Costa del Sol gives of course opportunities like sailing and canoeing. This Costa is a one hour drive. In the mountains there are many opportunities for horseback riding. And of course there is the swimming pool of the house itself.
