Maida Vale has its base in Holland and "Prefab Bliss" is their second album which was released last year through Anthem Records. On this album Prefab Bliss includes seven tracks and their music can be described as a mixture between classic metal and modern progressive metal or if you want it’s similar sounding to some classical progressive metal bands. To get a picture imagine a combination of IRON MAIDEN, KING CRIMSON, TOOL and RAINBOW and you will have the music of “Prefab Bliss” always enriched with the band’s personal taste. The production is really good and the sound of this album is clearly another surprise release from Holland. Hear their stuff and if you want buy their albums through their official site.

A Melodic Rockband from Holland! MAIDA VALE play a sort of 80s influenced melodic (hard) rockstyle, which instrumentally sounds quite good (especially guitarist Ronald Bleys), but vocally it’s not that strong unfortunately. 7 (some very lengthy) songs are on their 2nd CD ‘Prefab bliss’. The song are both uptempo and more midtempo epic orientated. Somehow this band reminds me of another Dutch band from the past called GINN PALACE, if anyone out there actually remembers that band? Like I said it’s melodic rock, but not just straight-ahead, because you can also clearly hear Progressive Rock and other more Mythical Epic Melancholic Pop/Rock in MAIDA VALE’s music. This can best be heard in the songs “Born of hope” and “Red light job” (this has a great classic 70s rock guitar solo), tracks which give MAIDA VALE an own face, because of it’s original style. Another praise is the diversity of the band, because a song like “Wet dream market” sounds completely different than the rest of the CD, because this particular song sounds like a mix between early BLACK SABBATH guitar riffs, LED ZEPPELIN and BLUE OYSTER CULT. I'm not really sure about Prefab Bliss. On the one hand I find it hard to listen to the underground punk rock on the disc because of the stripped down sound; I prefer a somewhat warmer sound. I wonder whether the band aimed for this sound or that it was due to the limited funds for this independent release. On the other hand I can't lose the idea that witnessing Maida Vale conquer the stage is pure pleasure. Their music is perfect for a theatrical performance that can capture both your eyes and your ears.
The sound on Prefab Bliss isn't perfect. The guitar is at times a little bit dominant over the other instruments. Especially because the drums sound a little bit flat and the bass hard to hear; a pity because there are some excellent bass lines on the album.
What I particularly like about Maida Vale is the unorthodox vocals of Van Aalst. The theatrical approach - in this way he sounds a bit like the incredible Geoff Mann (Twelfth Night). If you like sweet, polished and natural vocals, you wonít like Maida Vale. If you desire power, emotion and compelling vocals, this is one for you. Listen to Red Light Job, probably the best track on the album, and you'll know what I mean.
All in all I must say that Maida Vale show potential. But instead of recommending you to buy this cd blindly, I'd like to advise you to check out Maida Vale at one of their gigs. (Geert)

Allein schon der sehr eigenwillige Bandname bringt es eigentlich auf den Punkt: MAIDA VALE passen mit ihrem zweiten Release „Prefab Bliss“ in keine herkömmliche Schublade. ‚Guide To The Game Of Love’ ist ein toller, schweißtreibender Rocksong, während das darauf folgende ‚Remote Control’ eher in Richtung Psychedelic geht. Und so geht es eigentlich weiter: ‚Punk’ zum Beispiel ist ein kurzer, aber umso geilerer Punk-Song, wie der Titel ja auch schon sagt. In Form des etwas ruhigeren ‚Born Of Hope’ gibt’s dann wieder was zum Ausruhen um anschließend in den ‚Wet Dream Market’ einzutreten, der mich jetzt aber nicht so anspricht, da er etwas zu langatmig wirkt. Beim ‚Red Light Job’ wird das Rotlicht zunächst mal sehr dezent, soll heißen ruhig aufgedreht, während zum Ende hin dann doch noch alles tiefrot erleuchtet. Den Schlusspunkt setzt der Titelsong „Prefab Bliss“, ein neunminütiges Monumentalwerk, das man einfach gehört haben muss: die Jungs spielen hier wirklich ihre ganze Routine aus und bringen sogar ein paar Rainbow-Einflüsse ein. Die niederländische Band Maida Vale stellt mit Prefab Bliss ihr zweites selbstproduziertes Album vor. Darauf bewegen sich die vier Jungs aus dem Land der Windmühlen, Tulpen und Rauchwaren irgendwo zwischen Bad Religion und den Red Hot Chili Peppers.
Die Assoziation mit den amerikanischen Edelpunks von Bad Religion kommt aber am häufigsten, wenn auch die teilweise etwas holprigen Vocals und das Fehlen mehrstimmiger Gesangsparts diesem Vergleich im Weg stehen.
Instrumental tendieren die Songs definitiv mehr in Richtung Punk. Alle Stücke haben ein dominantes Riff und in der Regel keine Leads. Hier und da blitzen dann aber auch rhythmische Spielereien auf, die einen Verweis auf die Chilis rechtfertigen.
Neben dem manchmal etwas unmelodischen Gesang ist der Sound im ganzen etwas sehr roh. Wenn hier überhaupt gemastert wurde, dann nicht sehr professionell. Trotzdem zeigen Maida Vale Songwriterqualitäten. Ihnen gelingt es, aus verschiedenen Elementen der Alternative Sektors einen eigenen Sound zu kreieren. Wer also Kreativität jenseits des Einheitsbreis belohnen und etwas Basisförderung betreiben möchte, der kann die CD auf der Homepage der Band erstehen.

In het verleden is Maida Vale vergeleken met uiteenlopende acts als Iron Maiden, King Crimson, Tool, Dead Can Dance, Depeche Mode, Yes, Rainbow, Frank Zappa, Bad Religion, The Darkness en diverse andere staat te lezen in de biografie van de band op de bandpagina. Wij missen nog de Dizzy Man's Band in dat rijtje. Wie denkt dat dit negatief bedoeld is, vergist zich lelijk, want DMB had een heel eigen geluid (wat ook opgaat voor Maida Vale) en net als deze band uit Utrecht van die (soms) typische snelle, vrolijk aandoende, bijna lyrische gitaarlijntjes. Bovendien heeft ook Maida Vale duidelijk gevoel voor humor. Dat hoor je niet alleen terug in de teksten, maar blijkt ook uit een aantal wendingen en in sommige arrangementen. Zo hebben we meteen al de vinger gelegd op een aantal positieve punten, maar er is ook het nodige aan te merken op 'Prefab Bliss'.
Kort gezegd zou je kunnen stellen dat het viertal het in zich heeft een heel goed album te maken, maar de volgende keer een producer of bevriende scheidsrechter moet aantrekken. Iemand die een paar gitaarsoli schrapt en de groep steeds voorhoudt dat er met de gespeelde stijl veel meer gedaan kan worden met verschillen in dynamiek. De muziek leent zich uitstekend voor veel meer hink-stap-sprong geluid, de groep gaat wel van hard naar zacht en weer terug, maar het geluid blijft daarbij te vaak van een zelfde soort niveau. Een coach had ook mogen zeggen dat we een paar fragmenten al eerder hebben gehoord en zou zanger Jan-Willem van Aalst apart genomen hebben om hem te vertellen dat hij er als zanger nog lang niet is en zijn uitspraak zeker moet verbeteren.
Nu lijken we weer door te slaan naar negatief en dat is zeker niet nodig, want er is op 'Prefab Bliss' ook veel waar we absoluut over te spreken zijn. Zoals genoemd heeft het kwartet iets heel eigens, is de instrumentbeheersing meer dan okay en weet de band op het compositorische vlak hier en daar te imponeren. Daar staat dan tegenover dat een aantal nummers te lang duurt. Je ziet het al, we dobberen wat heen en weer tussen wel en niet en goed en slecht. 'Prefab Bliss' is een goed beluisterbaar album waar flink wat plezier aan te beleven is, maar Maida Vale moet op termijn tot veel meer in staat zijn.
