Ronald Bleys - guitar

Born
Definitely, in Utrecht

Instruments
Started on organ, switched to guitar, plays left-handed. Main guitars are a Music Man Silhouette Special, a Gibson SG Standard, a customized Roland G303 and a Gibson Les Paul custom. Played the Roland GR 700 guitar synthesizer in the 80's, in the band Accidental Gap. Used a Marshall JCM 800 amp for ages but switched to ENGL amplification recently. The ENGL Savage SE kicks ass !

Main bands
1978-1983. Anthem. Hardrock band from Utrecht that started as a punk band. Other musicians: Joop Deveer (bass), Roel Verkerk (drums) and Paul Verkerk (vocals / piano, replaced first singer and keyboard player Nico Mol). Did many live performances in the Netherlands. Released the single "Love on the line" in 1982. The band had two famous managers: Jan van Driel and Pieter Stouten.
1983-1987. Accidental Gap. Band (also from Utrecht) with a peculiar style: a rock basis with jazz and folk elements. By some their style was called new wave, as with many bands in the early 80's, but Accidental Gap was different. Other musicians: Ton van Dort (drums), Tjerk Koopman (bass), Rob Krot (vocals). Released the single "The eyes of K" in 1986. A reincarnation of the band without Ronald played in the 90's.
1988-1989. Avalanche. Cover band. Other musicians: Chantal Bergers (vocals), Egon Doppenberg (bass), Jeroen Leytens (guitar), Rutger de Ridder (saxophone, flute, vocals), Michiel van Rijn (drums). The band had two notorious managers: Steven Claus and Michael Hartman.
1997-       . Maida Vale. Well, you should know the band by now.

Other musical projects
There have been many side projects and minor bands. Some of the most interesting musical projects were:
1982.       Dedicated to you. Short-lived band with Rob Krot (vocals), Joop Deveer (bass) and Jean de Zwaan (drums). Very heavy ! The band did one much talked-of concert at the 'NV-huis' in Utrecht (nowadays calledTivoli). Good recordings of this concert are available, including a punk version of "Raindrops keep falling on my head".
1982.       Project Mercurion. Solo project of Anthem singer Paul Verkerk. In the course of 1982 the old boys of Anthem made some studio recordings of 5 of his songs backed by 4 girls and a saxophone player.
1991-1992. CRT. Promising band with Chantal Bergers (vocals / synthesizer), Ton van Dort (drums) and Tjerk Koopman (bass). The band stopped too soon due to circumstances. A few guitar riffs that were originally composed for this band are now in Maida Vale songs ("Killer mouse" and "Prefab bliss").

Musical influences
Many of course, in different styles. To mention a few: Deep Purple, Soft Machine, Siouxsie and the Banshees. Guitarists that most influenced own playing style are probably Ritchie Blackmore, Robert Fripp and John McGeoch.

Other interesting notes
Maybe, but let's not bore the reader.

Niels Harkink - bass

Born
As well, in Enschede. Lived in Dordrecht for eight years and moved to Zoetermeer where he spent his high school years. Currently lives in De Bilt.

Musical history
Started out at the age of six with a course in general musical knowledge at the Muziekschool Dordrecht. Didn't really like to practise a lot but liked playing together with the other youngsters. Started playing the nylon string guitar for real at the Muziekschool Zoetermeer. His teacher was Sjaak van Vught. He had a lot of trouble getting started and at first didn't like it at all. With the help and persistance of his mother he persevered. He reached quite a professional level and even thought about subscribing to the musical conservatory. He didn't like the perspective though of teaching children to play the guitar till his death, so he chose for a medical carreer instead. After playing electric guitar for some years in high school bands and student bands he started playing the bass guitar in 1996. Niels learned a lot about sound engineering, recording, and mixing at the Erasmus College with the help of their excellent facilities and Nick Mulder.

Favourite musicians
Flea, Les Claypool, Bootsy Collins, the Pink Floyd crew and Marcus Miller are just a few musicians that  always give him a good kick to start practising.

Main bands and projects
1989-1993. Guitar ensemble of the Muziekschool Zoetermeer. Tubular Bells and The Westside Story are just a few of the projects that were performed.
1990.          Won a second prize at a concours by performing latin american acoustical pieces. Spent the price money on a superb classical guitar and a chorus for the electric guitar.
1990-1993. School bands. Several, with and without an orchestra.
1992.         Project for school. Participants wrote, arranged and recorded the song A Handbag Full Off Memories in just 4 days. Guide and main writer was Nick Mulder.
1993-1995. Student bands, played in several and quit lessons on the acoustic guitar.
1995.         Played tree and bass guitar in the play De Getemde Feeks. A play from the medical students association Utrecht (M.S.F.U."Sams") with live music integrated on stage with the decors.
1997-       . Maida Vale.

Musical influences
Many. Ranging from Richard Wagner to Anthrax and from Underworld to Moloko. Anything goes as long as it is performed with devotion and a lot of expression. All time heroes at the moment are Pink Floyd, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Primus with Sailing the Seas of Cheese and Crowded House with Woodface.

Other interesting notes
Is currently building and learning how to use a digital PC-based home studio.
