The Steam Engine.

This steam engine is a combination of two models from the book "THE MECCANO SUPER MODELS" from Geoff Wright namely the "Twin Cylinder Steam Engine model #32" and the "Single-Cylinder Horizontal Steam Engine model #11". The first model was too big and the other model too small for me so I have decided to make a combination between these two models. I have made pictures from the parts of this model so that it is possible to rebuild this model with help of this page. If you like to rebuild this model and you have EXCEL on your computer you can click here for to download the partlist of this model.

The Basis plate.

The basis plate is build with angle girders #7 and #8 and five flat plates #70 and seven flat plates 52a so as is good to seen on the picture on the right side. On the places were must come the firebox, the driving gear and the flywheel are let holes in the plate.

There is also one of the brackets for the flywheel build on the basis plate. This bracket consists of an angle girder #9b, two corner gussets #108 and a crank #62. Possibly you can made some strips as shim between the frame and the bracket when it is necessary to get the flywheel in a good balance.

The Firebox, Boiler en Steampipe.

The firebox is made with the help of six flat plates #53a and a various angle girders viz. four pieces #8b and #9a. Through using two hinges #114 is it possible to open the firedoor #72. The handle is made from a rail support #136, a pawl without bush #147c and an axle rod #18b with this can the door good close.

The boiler consists of two hub disks #118 that were around bolted with twenty-five perforated strips #1b. For the solidity is placed into the middle a circular girder #143. The part that comes into the firebox is not strips bolted. On the front of the boiler are placed three meters viz. a gauge-glass, a thermometer and a manometer. The gauge-glass and the thermometer are both made from two handrail supports #136 and there clenched between a axle rod #17. The manometer is made with a flanged wheel #20. On the top of the boiler is also placed a safety valve that is made by dint of two flanged wheels #20.

The steam-pipe consists from four curved stepped strips #90a bolted on two perforated strips #1b and two perforated strips #2a. The pipe is bolted between the boiler and the steam distributor. There, on the bottom of the pipe is with a #45 and a steering wheel #185 a stopcock assembled.

The Flywheel.

The flywheel is composed from two ring frames #167b these are connected with each other through sixteen fishplates #10. The spokes are made from sixteen perforated strips #2a that are connected with two bush wheels #24. Onto the axle rod #15a is a pinion #26 connected that meshed with a gearwheel #27a who is build onto the crank-shaft.

The centrifugal governor.
The centrifugal governor is keep simple. It consists of an axle rod #15a, which is built on the top a strip coupling #63b. Onto this strip coupling is placed a perforated strip #6a with the middle hole into the coupling. On the two ends of the strip is build two the same strip. Onto the end of these strips are build two pulley wheels #22a. If the centrifugal governor turns shall the strips with the pulley wheels going outside through the "from the out the middle point flying power". How faster the centrifugal governor turns how further the pulley wheels going to the outside. The axle rod of the centrifugal governor is operated through an axle rod #15 where on both side is mounted a pinion #25. One side were operated through a contrate #28 that is build on the crankshaft. The other pinion #25 powered the contrate #29 that is build onto the axle rod of the centrifugal governor. This all is mounted on a frame that consists of a flat plate #74 that is build on the small side of three double angle strips #48a. Two bush wheels #24 are use as bearing of the axle rod. One is build under the flat plate if the cylinder frame and the other are mounted on the flat plate #74.

The Cylinders.
The cylinders with the crankshaft are built on a frame. I have decided to use three different size cylinders. The frame is build up with angle girders #7a and #9 were between are mounted three flange plates #52 for the cylinders and one flat plate #52a for the centrifugal governor. Also are built on this frame the brackets for the crankshaft. These consists of four corner gussets #108 and two corner gussets were between is built a flat plate #72.
The biggest cylinder is the #162 cylinder that with a connecting-rod that is made with four perforated strips #2a is connected to the crankshaft and via a end bearing #166 with a axle rod #15a that goes into the cylinder. This axle rod is bearing through a bush wheel #24 what is build into the inner side of the cylinder end #162a. With a little bit oil onto the axle rod can move the axle rod noiseless into the cylinder.
The middle size cylinder is build-up through a cylinder #216 with on the two outsides two flange wheels #20b. The rod is a perforated strip #1b that is connected on the eccentric #130 to the crankshaft. On the other side of the perforated strip is mounted a handrail support #136 that is connected on an axle rod #16 that goes into the cylinder.
The smallest cylinder is connected on the same manner only is this cylinder not connected on the crankshaft but on the driving shaft with eccentric #130a. The other side of the strip is connected a strip coupling #63b and there on is connected an axle rod #17. The cylinder is a sleeve piece #163 where on two flange-wheels #20 are mounted. With axle rods and couplings is made a rack for the leading of the strips of the middle and smallest cylinder. Onto the flat plate #52a are built two rod-sockets #179 on which the whole rack is built. For the leading of the cylinder rods are used four slide pieces #50.

You can see how the crankshaft is built on the picture on the right side. The parts of the biggest cylinder are made from two triangular plates #76 whereon two semi circular plates #214 are bolted. There are mounted two cranks #62 for the connection onto the driving shaft. It is good to seen the eccentrics #130 and #130a from the other two cylinders and also the contrate #28 that drive on the pinion #25 from the centrifugal governor.

The driving gear.

The driving gear of the entirely model is very simple. The worm #32 on the shaft of the motor drives a pinion #25 that is mounted on a axle rod #15a. On this axle rod is built a sprocket wheel #95a that drive, with help of a chain, a sprocket wheel #96 that is mounted on a axle rod #16. This axle rod is placed under the crankshaft. This all is very personally because this is to make on a various on manners. I don’t have used a Meccano motor but, so as you can see, a 12Vdc motor from the hobby shop.
