Michael William Kaluta (1947) was born on August 25 in Guatemala City, Guatemala. In 1969 Kaluta starts working in comics. During this year, he assists Al Williamson, has several assignments from Charlton Comics, and (along with Jeffrey Jones) assists Bernie Wrightson on Showcase #83 and Showcase #84. Showcase #83 is released in June of 1969; the first of his Charlton stories, appearing in Teen Confessions #59, is published in December of that year. In 1969 Kaluta also begins working on Carson of Venus, which appears as a back-up feature in Korak, Son of Tarzan.

In 1971 House of Secrets #92 is published. This issue contains the first Swamp Thing story. In addition to assisting Bernie Wrightson on the issue, the villain in the story is modelled after Kaluta. In 1973 Michael Kaluta starts collaborating with Denny O'Neil on The Shadow for DC Comics and in 1976 Kaluta joins Jeffrey Jones, Barry Windsor-Smith, and Bernie Wrightson in forming The Studio.

In 1985 Marvel Comics publishes Starstruck and in 1988, collaborating once again with Denny O'Neil, Kaluta returns to The Shadow with , which was first published in Marvel Graphic Novel #35

In 1993 The Michael Wm. Kaluta Sketchbook is published. Kaluta also co-plots a Shadow story that is published by Dark Horse Comics. This is the first of several collaborations with Joel Goss. In 1996 Kaluta's first cover for The Books of Magic is released.
