05/09/04 - Chris Bachalo Update
|
|
Chris Bachalo recently posted a message on his yahoo message group to let his fans in some
interesting news tidbits. The full text of his message is reprinted below:
Hope you've all been well.
Thanks for hanging out and keeping me company the past few months. I don't respond often enough but I
continue to receive your postings. I wrapped my six issues of Cap about a week ago and though I'd drop
by and say Howdy!
What's up....
Special thanks go out to Tim. He puts up with my wobbly delivery of pages and never complains, makes me
look good with his fabulous inks---anyone that has an original really knows what I'm talking about ---and
makes time to hang out at this site. A class act.
Check out the recently shipped issue number three of Common Grounds over at Top Cow. Jim showed me the
original series independently published by Troy Hickman and company. I loved it, so I took a pay cut
and managed to turn it around in the middle of my busy Cap schedule.
I recently completed a pin up for Mark Millar's and Top Cow's Wanted, featuring Deadly Nightshade and
Imp. I'll post that soon.
I'm currently working on Comicrafts Hipflask:Captain Stoneheart and the Truth Fairy written by The
amazing Joe Kelly. It's really good. The issue is going to be told via a series of collage images very
similar to what I did in the Witching hour. They are going to print the art using scans of the pencils.
Should prove interesting. I 'll have that done in a week or two.
Check out the the new movie Around the World in Eighty days. I had a small part--so small I wasn't
eligible for a credit-- in the design of the Bad Guys Scorpion Tattoo. I did travel up to Hollywood for a
day to hang with the director Frank Coraci. Vey cool!
Doing a few conceptual drawings for Oakley at the moment .
Recently completed four cards for the upcoming Upper Deck/DC role playing game. I completed cards for
Batgirl, Phantasm, Lady Shiva and Omen. Dunno when the release date is for that game.
I believe that the Marvel Role playing game just shipped. I completed five cards for that game including
Invisible Girl, Juggernaut, and Spiderman.
I'm having a blast with the coloring. Hope you're enjoying the results on Cap, my covers and the trading
cards. Special thanks go out to Marvel and Joe Q for giving me the opportunity, especially on Cap where
time was a big issue.
My next --super top secret-- project will be a big one. Akira Yoshida is writing-- he's new to me, but
his proposal read very well--Tim's on inks---Yayyy!--and I'm lobbying for the coloring chores. It'll be
a six issue mini and--most likely -- will debut early next year and published by MC!
I'm putting together a proposal for a project after the top secret project--yep, I aim to write it.
That'll be a first. It promises to be one that you will absolutely welcome. Hopefully, MC will agree.
New art for sale soon. Tim and I have about 10 issues of art to split. I will continue to sell at ebay as
well as well as my website that, I hope, is active shortly. I'll let you know when its up.
I posted a few Cap pages as well as the sixth New Mutant cover that I did that was not used. They were
concerned about differece of style --a reasonable reaction--considering the leap that I took on that
cover.
Ok. Back to work for me. Keep in touch!!
Best!

Chris Bachalo recently posted a message on his yahoo message group to let his fans in some
interesting news tidbits. The full text of his message is reprinted below:
HEY GROUP!
Just posted a few of the New Mutant covers that I've been working on. Hope you enjoy them. You're
getting the first peek at a few of them. One of the perks of being in this fish tank.
Wrapping colors on Cap 21 next week. Have most of Cap 22 drawn.
Also, continuing work on Hipflask: Stoneheart and the Truth Fairy for Comicraft. 7 pages into that book.
Hope to have that finished by year end.
Signed on to create a 9 page short for the anthology Common Grounds over at Top Cow. I believe its due to
ship in Spring 2004. Check it out. The stories are wonderful--the reason I agreed to jump on board.
Not sure of what I'll be working on after Cap 25 and Common Grounds. Have my hooks in the waters to see
what I might scare up. I'll do my best to let know as soon as anything bites.
Thanks for participating and for your kind words. They are always welcome.
Best!

12/20/01 - Chris Bachalo Interview
|
|
I found an interview with Chris Bachalo on the Silver Bullet Comics website.
In this interview he talks about his old work and his current work on Steampunk.
Here's a excerpt of the interview:
Jason Brice: Are you willing to "break the rules" and throw out a writer's suggested layout for a page,
and just do it your way?
Chris Bachalo: The only writer that I've ever worked with that suggested page layout was Neil Gaiman and
that was on Sandman #12, the first comic I ever worked on. If you're talking about page
breakdown in the script then yes I do take liberties at times in how I tell the story.
Sometimes I add panels, other times I take them out. I may add a splash page or make scenes a
little longer, others a little shorter. The most important part is that with whatever I do it's
important the message that the writer is selling doesn't get lost in the shuffle.

07/11/00 - Steampunk Gets Clear
|
|
Comics Newsarama at Fandom.com posted an interview with Steampunk writer Joe Kelly in
their newsarama weekly column. In the interview he explains why Steampunk's story and art is
so very "dense", and maybe even somewhat confusing. And according to the writer - as it turns
out - it was all part of the plan from the beginning...
Here's a small excerpt of the interview:
...
"The other part of it is, is that I figured this guy wakes up after a 100 years into this
[bleeped]-up Victorian world, I want the audience to feel his disorientation, as and he starts
to clear his head, we clear our heads along with him."

05/03/00 - Jeph Loeb Talks Chris Bachalo
|
|
Bill Baker, a contributing writer for Comic Book Resources website, posted an
interview with Jeph Loeb. In this interview he talks about his past work and his collaborations
with artists such as Chris Bachalo and Tim Sale. Here is an excerpt from that interview:
...
BB: What kind of scripts did you supply Chris with - the plot outline style or ...?
JL: No, Chris worked from very, very detailed plots and descriptions and bits of
dialogue. He also contributed to the dialogue when he wanted to. Karen had us do whole
backstories for everyone to draw from. We researched a lot about Wiccans and Wiccan rituals, but
in the end, it was a work of fiction, so we did what we wanted. Chris is the first and only
artist who ever would read the script and then ask me to write MORE. To put in more panels and
more detail. He was very much like working with a film director -- he saw it in his head and he
wanted it on paper to make it come to life. Every page he did just lit up the work. Then,
Richard Starkings came in and lettered and did the designs based on Chris' own handwriting.
...
Loeb also said in the interview that the Witching Hour will be collected in a hardback (with a
softcover edition coming later?!). There are also plans on doing further stories, but it will
be up to Bachalo's schedule. Loeb says: "The only thing he and I have talked about is doing a
Christmas story where Red and White meet a serial killer on Christmas Eve. It's called "What's
Black and White and Red All Over?" -- so hopefully we'll do that sometime soon."

12/23/99 - Witching Hour Sequel or Prequel?! / Dark Victory Turning Point
|
|
Comic Book Resources/The Comic Wire posted the following interview with Jeph Loeb:
LOEB 2000: 'WITCHING HOUR,' 'SUPERMAN' 'DARK VICTORY'
The end of the 20th century was very good to Jeph Loeb, giving him critical and commercial
success with a pair of lauded DC Comics limited series.
His 21st century may well look much the same, with a sequel to "Batman: The Long Halloween" and
a move from the "Superman for All Seasons" limited series to the monthly "Superman" book
receiving raves, as well as his "Witching Hour" limited series for DC/Vertigo.
"The reaction to 'Witching Hour' has been phenomenal," Loeb told the Comic Wire on Tuesday. "As
with most things these days, under-ordered, sold out, reordered, sold out, etc ... Chris
[Bachalo] and I have been talking about something for late next year. We've got a neat little
story cooked up where Red and White meet a serial killer on Christmas Eve called 'What's Red and
White and Black All Over?' that is very ... disturbing. But, how and where that takes place, we
haven't decided yet. We've also been thinking about the character of Gray - who apparently is
our breakout lead - and dealing with the 300 years he was waiting for White and the various
souls he met along the way. That would allow us to do a Western Witching Hour, a 1940s crime
noir Witching Hour - that sort of thing. And weren't the 1950s McCarthy hearings just one big
Witch Hunt anyway?
"On the Superman front, the world just isn't ready for young Ed McGuinness (in about two short
weeks). His style is going to set the course for Superman in 21st Century in the same way Swan
and Byrne and Jurgens set it for their respective decades. What we're particularly excited about
are the computer graphics designed by Ed and executed by Wildstorm for Brainiac 13 - the
Brainiac of tomorrow's tomorrow. A lot has been tried using these graphics, but we don't think
to the extent and importance of a major, major villain in the DCU. Not to be missed.
"Lastly, as frightening as it seems, Tim [Sale] and I are working on the second half of 'Batman:
Dark Victory' with the end in sight. It has been an incredible delight the way people have
responded this time around - and the amateur sleuths writing in and posting on the message
boards who are working on the mysteries are even more clever than during ['Dark Victory'
predecessor] 'The Long Halloween,' so it's really keep us on our toes. All we can tell you is
that Valentine's Day (#6 'Love') will be a critical turning point for the series."

10/25/99 - Midnight Bell Tolls Jeph Loeb's Vertigo Premiere and Chris Bachalo's Return with
the Witching Hour
|
|
At midnight strikes THE WITCHING HOUR, the new miniseries marking the VERTIGO debut of
award-winning writer Jeph Loeb (SUPERMAN, BATMAN: DARK VICTORY). This landmark 3-issue Prestige
Format miniseries is also the VERTIGO return of artist Chris Bachalo (DEATH: THE HIGH COST OF
LIVING, STEAMPUNK, Generation X), elegantly inked by Art Thibert (SUPERMAN/FANTASTIC FOUR,
X-Men). With issue #1 arriving in stores November 10, anticipation for this miniseries is
steadily mounting among retailers, fans, and industry professionals alike.
Set in Manhattan, the first issue of THE WITCHING HOUR introduces Amanda Collins, a mysterious
woman who moves through the troubled lives of ordinary people armed with little more than a
blank white business card and a strange, supernatural presence. She's giving them the chance to
change their lives; but the choice they make will depend entirely on the forces that already
exist in their hearts. Amanda herself is a mesmerizing presence and, as she works modern magic
with the help of a colorful if not entirely loyal coterie of followers, another side of her
begins to emerge: one that is troubled, powerful and centuries old. At the crossroads of the
supernatural and the very real, THE WITCHING HOUR spins bold, provocative tales of sin, magic
and redemption.
