02/19/06 - Bachalo Interview
|
|
The people over at comicfoundry.com recently posted an interview with Chris Bachalo about his work on Uncanny X-Men.
Here's a small excerpt of the interview:
comicfoundry.com: How do you approach creating a cover?
Chris Bachalo: [...] On Uncanny, my objective is grab the reader with a simple, striking image, with as few characters as possible, using a narrow range of color—the more colors on the cover the more it will blend with the other riff raff on the stands—and sell the buyer that this is a dangerous, over the top, super powered, sci-fi adventure book worth their three bucks.

09/13/05 - Romita Jr. talks Sentry
|
|
Newsarama recently posted an interview with John Romita Jr. about his upcoming work on the eight issue Sentry
mini-series.
Here's a small excerpt of the interview:
Newsarama: First off, what led you to The Sentry? Since you’ve left Amazing Spider-Man, you’ve become something of a journeyman, with Wolverine, Black Panther, and now this. What leads you, in regards to your career, from project to project?
John Romita Jr.: I was actually asked to do this by Joe Quesada, and when I heard that Paul was writing, I instantly agreed, because I really enjoyed working with him on the Hulk. It was a strategy thing between me and Quesada – I told him that I would entrust my career path at Marvel to him for a couple of years, and we’d see how it went. First, he pushed me towards Wolverine after leaving Spider-Man, which I didn’t initially want to do.

track and issue 2 of Daredevil: Father finally hits stores this August with the rest of the series guaranteed to ship the following
months. Comic Book Resources spoke to Quesada about the project, who promised that the long delay has not changed one word of

05/24/05 - Romita Jr. going to DC?
|
|
In his All the Rage column, over at the Silver Bullet Comics website, Blair Marnell posted an interesting
RUMOUR about John Romita Jr.'s future:
Word among industry insiders is that DC is once again spending a MASSIVE amount of money to land their latest "star acquisitions."
And John Romita Jr. is one of the artists that DC will be making a major push for, when Romita Jr’s Marvel exclusive contract
is up later this year. Apparently, DC made a similar offer to Romita Jr. the last time his contract was up, but the pending offer is
said to be "substantially bigger," though no official contact is expected until the end of his current deal. Make no mistake, Romita
Jr. is highly coveted for his star power, not to mention his consistently high output. Given that the Romita family name is almost
synonymous with Marvel and that Romita Jr. has spent the bulk of his career at the company, it would be shocking if he jumped ship.
But it would be a huge coup for DC...

will debut in December as a bi-monthly series.
- World’s Greatest Super-Heroes is a July-shipping, oversized, slipcased hardcover that collects Paul Dini and Alex Ross'
Batman: War On Crime, Superman: Peace On Earth, Shazam: Power of Hope, Wonder Woman: Spirit of Truth, their two JLA volumes, plus
promotional art, sketches, commentary and more.
- Grant Morrison reaffirmed "All Star Superman" as a 12 issue limited series, saying Frank Quitely would explode if the
story was longer than that. But he would like to do more, maybe another 8 issues, or for the rest of his life if possible. Either
way was fine with him.

03/01/05 - Tim Sale Interview
|
|
The Legions Of Gotham recently posted an interview with Tim Sale on their website. In the interview he talks
about his Batman related work and upcoming projects.
Here's a small excerpt of the interview:
Legions of Gotham: What projects lay on the horizon for you...DC/Batman and otherwise?
Tim Sale: I still am under exclusive contract with DC for another project or two. What's been discussed are a SPIRIT graphic novel
called THE CHRISTMAS SPIRIT, inspired by Eisner's own stories of the Spirit at Christmastime. The concept would be that the stories
have recently been uncovered in a warehouse somewhere, done by the Eisner studio in the 40's when he was in the army. Short stories,
48 pages, Jeph writing, me drawing and the fabulous Mark Chiarello coloring. The other project is a coffee-table book of stories
starring Batman and Superman, not together, but each in his own tale. The stories are pairs, and linked by a theme -- Sleep, Food,
Home, like that. Big, like 220 pages, and oversized, a book anyone might want to own, not just those into comics. That's my dream,
anyway.

The recent WonderCon convention yielded some interesting news tidbits:
- After a delay from its original December 2004 start, Kurt Busiek’s Astro City: The Dark Age begins in June. The story, of
the ‘70s in Astro City, has its roots in what Busiek originally envisioned as Marvels II. Brent Anderson pencils, with covers by
Alex Ross. The Dark Age will run for 12 issues, and will tell of the Silver Agent’s final fate.
- Planetary is scheduled to run through to issue #26
- The next Simpsons' Treehouse of Horror comic will reunite Len Wein and Bernie Wrightson to do a Swamp Thing story,
which is known as 'Squish Thing,' where Homer gets engulfed in a squishy accident and becomes a Squish Thing."
- The OMAC Project, a six-issue mini-series from DC Comics by Rucka and Saiz, will have covers by Jose Ladronn.
- Each issue of Justice, the bi-monthly series (DC Comics) by Alex Ross, Jim Krueger and Doug Braithwaite, will be
40 pages.

03/01/05 - Cassaday extends run on Astonishing X-Men
|
|
During WonderCon last month, Joss Whedon announced that he and artist John Cassaday would be continuing their run on Marvel's
premiere mutant title for an additional 12 issues, making it 24 issues total for the duo. The duo will finish up their current run
on the title, followed by a short break, and then get back to the title with an additional twelve issues.
No word on whether the title would simply take a break or if fill-in creative teams would participate. Once they've finished that,
the duo will embark on a "Giant Sized Astonishing X-Men" one-shot.

02/13/05 - San Diego Comic Con Loot - PART THREE
|
|
Here are two new pieces of art that I like to share with you. The first piece is a commission I got from Eric Powell of
his salty peg-legged character named Fishy Pete, during last year's San Diego Con. Eric Powell is probably best known for his work
on his creator owned series The Goon, which is currently published by Dark Horse Comics. Fishy Pete is one of the characters
in The Goon.
The second piece is also by Eric Powell. This piece was recently acquired by a friend of mine, who has let me share it with you
(thanks Fons!). The Goon. The Zombie Priest. A couple of Zombies. This piece has it all!

Late last year, Marvel provided Newsarama with a fairly rare opportunity, that is, to see the early production on two
(then) upcoming issues of Wolverine, #24 and #25. The pages give something of an insight into the process of series artist John
Romita Jr. in terms of detail.

02/13/05 - Five Minutes With J.G. Jones
|
|
Dynamic Forces recently posted a short interview with J.G. Jones in which he talks about his work on the Wanted
mini-series with writer Mark Millar.
Here's a small excerpt of the interview:
DF: How has the Wanted experience and working with Mark Millar changed you?
JG JONES: I'm too old to let some little upstart scamp like Millar change me. I tried to work with the same approach on
Wanted that I always use. Storytelling comes first. This was pretty easy with Mark. I didn't have to change much from his script
when I was drawing, because he gives the artist pretty much every thing he needs to work with. He has clear, concise storytelling,
which is something I like.
