I assume Will Oldham has written all the lyrics and music.
This can't always be read from the records, so I'm not sure of it.

his hands
Officially released as: iTunes single, Candi Staton's album and 7" single "His Hands", Little Lost Blues.
The iTunes and Little Lost Blues version is the demo for Candi Staton.
From a promotional release sheet: Asked by producer Mark Nevers to write a song for the album,
Oldham penned a distillation of Staton's traumatic experiences as an abused and terrified wife.
"It's kind of a gospel song and it's kind of not," says Staton. "It ends up pointing you to the Redeemer,
but it starts out telling you about a normal, natural man and what he would do to you in an abusive situation.
I enjoyed singing that because it's so much like my life. I've lived through every line of that song."
When Nevers played the finished version to him over the phone, Candi's performance reduced Oldham to tears.
From an interview with Candi: "I didn't know Will Oldham, who wrote "His Hands", is that bad?. Will wrote the
song when he saw my show on TV where I told how I was abused. I love the ambiguity of the title but I definitely
wanted to sing it different than he did and I was allowed to do so".

Studio notes: 'Puff was the first song for us to get hold of within the album. Even when we were being told off
by the harpist for not writing the song out correctly, it always seemed happy with itself. There was never
anyone else who could sing it for us and when we heard Will's vocal for the first time
(recorded for us in Nashville by Mark Nevers) it was a strange and beautiful moment.'
Songs For The Young At Heart is Stuart A. Staples and David Boulter.
Peter, Paul and Mary's version of the song can found on their album "Moving" from 1963.
