Natan - Serenade of Darkness - Slechtvalk
Pictures by Remon

The night begun with the Symphonic Black metal band Natan, Belgium. I saw them the last time 2 years ago at Fear Dark Metal Meeting 2002, so I was really looking forward to seeing this band again. They have had some line-up changes and some new songs. They made a few mistakes here and there, but somehow the mistakes didn't manage to blow the concert. Maybe because I was thinking the whole time how great it was to see them again, so maybe I was somewhat biased, who knows? It was a great concert anyway, always good to hear potential Black metal bands in concert.

After Natan was another Symphonic Black metal band, Serenade of Darkness, from Holland. They put up a good show, though after some long songs I started to long for Slechtvalk, as I had come to see Natan and Slechtvalk. There were more people who thought this and several people thought Serenade of Darkness played too long. Still they put up a good show.

After Serenade of Darkness it was time for the headact, Slechtvalk. They had a line-up change: Shamgar playing guitars and doing the background vocals and Ohtar on lead vocals. To me this was a positive line-up change for the concert. While Shamgar just does his job, playing guitars and singing, Ohtar really puts up a great show. No offense to Shamgar, I understand you need to concentrate if you scream and play guitar at the same time, but as Ohtar had his hands free he could do whatever he wanted: Put his fist in the air and headbang and such, that just gives energy to the crowd. At some moment some guy jumped on the stage and attacked Ohtar, but within 20 seconds he had to run because the Slechtvalk fans started attacking him. So within 30 seconds it was all over, but it did have its effect to the atmosphere. People were somewhat nervous. But I do think the band handled the situation in the good way. The other bandmembers just kept playing, while Ohtar was trying to get the guy off the stage. As soon as he succeeded in that also he continued the song they were playing. And within 5 minutes I felt completely comfortable again.
This was my fourth Slechtvalk concert and the best until now.
