![]() Schaliach - Sonrise
This CD is from before Ole Børud joined Extol. Here you can hear he's not only known because he's in Extol, he just is a great musician. Together with Peter Dalbakk, also known from Vardøger, he recorded a very atmospheric Death metal cd. It's not very technical and the production isn't really great. But still, because the music has this atmosphere, it just sounds great. A Fathers Mourning is my favourite song, just clean vocals, it sounds great. Very sorrowful, very melodic. It's about 'the Prodigal Son', from the fathers perspective, but you can read that yourself, as I have the lyrics published here. Coming of the Dawn, which was also on the Northern Lights sampler, is a great melodic instrumental. Starting with the piano and later the melody is continued by guitars, very nice. Only one thing really annoys me, the ending of the album. The music is great, but than it just suddenly stops, than some seconds of silence, you hear someone doing something at his guitar and someone says some words in Norwegian. Later I found out he says something like "started to cough and shit". Well, this is maybe funny one time, but I think it's sad after a great sounding cd. But overall this is a beautiful album, which you can't miss if you enjoy melodic Death metal.
Review by Max (January 17 - 2004)
I don't need to introduce this band to you, as Max did it here too already, I think I ca nonly add for the ones that didn't know already that this is Norwegian project. It is a very sad thing that this 2-man project only released this album, (and 1 track that was on the re-issue), as from the beginning till the end, this album brings you non-stop professional musicianship. There are only 2 weak points, one of it is the production, it is not bad, but if it would've been somewhat clearer and thicker it would have had this little extra atmosphere, and second, as Max also told, the ending of the album, it's a bit sad, as it's not funny, nor is it a nice extra hidden track. Schaliach plays midtempo death metal, strongly melodic and atmospheric and slightly doomy, there are a instrumentals, there is accoustic guitar, you get it all. Vocals range from clean to grunts, and when talking about clean vocals, they're very calm and peaceful mid range vocals, no Narnia-type of vocals. The length of these songs vary between 2.30 and 9.30, with more long than short songs, but it seems that even the long songs don't get bored. This release is solid, and certainly a must have (especially since it got re-released) for every fan of death and doom, you won't regret getting this album.
