You have people who write lyrics, and you have people who write books. And you have a very small group of people who do
both, with Within the Ancient Forest, Andrew Tompkins becomes part of the last group. This was a fantasy book,
with the equally titled album covering the big lines of the book. The story is clear Christian fantasy. The music being
what Paramaecium proved to be on their debut, Doom/Death metal.
Being just a tad quicker than Exhumed of the Earth makes this album pretty different, also the use of a more medieval
sound with the harpsichord gives the overall sound a different feeling. The songs are somewhat more
interesting, even though they're still slow enough to not be able to completely get the story when reading along with the
vocals. Clean vocals are more often present on this album than on the debut, and they definitaly make the music more
interesting. The clean vocals part on I Am Not Alive is my favorite part of the CD. Another track that stand out is
Of My Darkest Hour, which leans to mid-tempo.
Eventually, this album leaves me the same as Exhumed of the Earth does, and most Doom metal does. It's just too slow
for me to keep my attention. I can hear it's a good Doom metal CD, but as much as I would want to like it, I just can't play
it regularly. Perhaps something to play once in a while, when the faster music starts to wear off.
