I love Kekal, Jeff Arwadi is one of the most interesting metalmusicians around if you ask me. So when I read
about him and Jason De Ron (Paramaecium) having a project together, I quickly looked into it and have been
following the news ever since. Well, Alteration, Altera Enigma's debut, is finally released.
If you know Jeff, you may guess that Altera Enigma is Progressive and different. That guess is completely
correct. Altera Enigma label themselves Progressive metal, but don't expect some Dream Theater clone, this is
completely different, though in the same genre. Most of the music is instrumental, and guitarsolos dominate the sound. The
music is filled with time-changes, solos, odd influences and heavy riffs. I'm not a huge fan of instrumental albums, which
I would eventually call Alteration, as there are only 3 songs with vocals, but I like this album. The guitars are
dominating, but heavily supported with keys, the drumcomputer sounds alright. Jeff's clean vocals fit the music and
add to the album on those few songs where they are present.
Overall a great album for fans of Progressive metal and fans of Kekal. You read far too little about Altera
Enigma, as I think it's a great project. I don't think it's a CD I'll find myself playing a lot, as I still prefer music
with vocals, but it's sure to pass by once in a while in my CD-player.
