Virgin Black is known as a band playing excellent Gothic metal, dark and emotional. This demo is in the same style. Dark, doomy and emotional. The first song, Veil of Tears, proves that immediately. This song has all the things that make Virgin Black. Extreme guitar riffs, an emotional and slow guitar solo in combination with piano and the vocals from Rowan. The next song, Black Corsage is not like Virgin Black. It's no Gothic metal, I rather call this Blues metal. The bass does a typical Blues rhythm, just like the vocals are typically Blues. But when you think this is going to be a typical Blues song the guitars start, continueing the Blues rhythm, but giving it a metal feeling. Rowan does some raw vocals, not the emotional vocals he mostly does. A very nice song, showing how Virgin Black experimented with different styles. This is the only really different song though, the other songs are Gothic metal. Mother of Cripples is a long, epic and emotional song. Rowan does some very mysterious sounding vocals, with the guitars also doing a pretty mysterious rhythm that gives a very dark feeling to the music. The piano also plays here at a emotional part, with the emotional vocals and the emotional feeling being continued by the guitars, this is a very nice song. The fourth, and pity enough, last song is Anthem. It's about the sacrifice of Christ. A beautiful testimony.
This is a nice demo, and a must when you're a Virgin Black fan. It's pretty rare though, so good luck finding it. Three songs have been released on Australia Metal Compilation IV - Falling on Deaf Ears. A sampler by Rowe Productions. This cd only misses the song Black Corsage.
