When Adam from Soundmass told me about his latest signing, Synnöve, he immediately cought my attention. So he sent me a copy and I was not disappointed. Synnöve bring a great mix of Goth, Doom and Black metal, mixing brutality with melody in a way that reminds me of Virgin Black. Extreme Death/Black metal vocals mixed with clean male and female vocals, combine that with synths and heavy guitars and you get the idea of what to expect from this EP. One strong point of this EP is how every song sounds completely different. Now one might think that to be a sign of Synnöve still looking to find their own sound, which is perhaps partly true, but it does create a great variation and keeps the CD interesting. While As the Snow Falls leans strongly to Doom metal, especially near the end, Beyond the Gaze of Black Doves rather leans to Goth metal and would totally fit a Virgin Black album. The production is pretty good, not perfect, but pretty good for a first release. This is a band I'm going to keep my eye on, definitaly a recommendation, especially for fans of Virgin Black.
