All of the music recorded here exists in a variety of different instrumental versions. For example, the Naxos catalogue itself already includes a recording of two of the Schumann works in this recital on a disc devoted to music for oboe and piano. It is useful, therefore, to find these pieces together on one disc in their cello and piano settings. |

Schubert's so-called Arpeggione Sonata, written for a now defunct guitar-cello hybrid, is most frequently played on the cello. Kliegel's and Merscher's response to the music is sensitive. They have good rapport, and sound well-balanced in this brightly-lit recording. Maisky's and Argerich's greater spontaneity and flair might, to some ears, sound indulgent. |

The three works by Schumann were written in 1849, during a period of rich creative activity. The Fantasiestucke were originally written for clarinet, but are equally effective on cello or violin. The present performance is strong and direct with warm, robust playing, particularly from the cello. However, the sensitivity of Maisky and Argerich more evocatively portrays the music's voyage from nostalgic lyricism to firm resolution. Similar differences between these two versions are also evident in the Funf Stucke im Volkston. Also included is the Adagio and Allegro, Op. 70, originally for horn, which Kliegel and Merscher play with richness of tone and expression. |

Maisky's and Argerich's performances offer greater refinement and a wider emotional range in a more natural recording, but Kliegel and Merscherat super-bargain price, and with the added bonus of the Adagio and Allegroare scarcely less desirable. |
