Looking up the Gramophone Compact Disc Guide
and Catalogue, I see that after only four years of the new medium, there are no fewer
than five rival recordings of this coupling. Chief among them are those by the Orlando
Quartet (Philips) and the Alban Berg Quartet (EMI). This present account by the Melos
Quartet of Stuttgart is among the finest of their records and is not only superbly played
but both beautifully and naturally recorded. Intonation and ensemble are perfect, and they
are scrupulous in their observance of dynamic markings. So, speaking personally, it would
be my preferred version. The slow movement of the Ravel is quite magical.
As regular readers will know, although most CD
transfers represent an improvement in terms of clarity, body and definition, there can be
loss of warmth. This is not the case here and putting the new CD alongside the LP, I can
report that this transfer represents an undoubted improvement in presence without any
loss.
