Bruckner Symphony No. 8—first version. Frankfurt Radio Symphony Orchestra / Eliahu Inbal.

Teldec/Conifer (Full price) (CD) ZL8 48218 (two discs, nas). From GK635642 (6/84).

This completes the reissues on CD of Inbal's important survey of the relatively unfamiliar first versions of the Third, Fourth and Eighth Symphonies. The Eighth is of particular importance since it allows us to hear such crucial things as Bruckner's re-thinking of the coda of the first movement and his complex thinking about the shaping of the slow movement's climaxes. It is difficult after hearing this original version (VIII/1 in the Bruckner Society Edition) not to come away with renewed admiration for Robert Haas's editorial procedures in this symphony. Performance and recording are both excellent.
