The town is Antwerp (Belgium), the date is the 25th of april 1686, the time is nine o’clock in the evening.

A priests walks through the small medieval streets of this port. In the Onze-Lieve-Vrouwestraat he hears a baby crying. Just opposite the hostel “Te Gulick” he finds a young boy, barely three weeks old, wrapped in a green blanket and a white cloth. The child wore a diaper, half a shirt and a white cap on his head.

It was the feastday of St. Marc, the evangelist, so the child’s christian name became Marcus, the name of the inn became his last name: Gulickx.

Marcus Gulickx was baptized in the St. Joris church and then he was send to a farmers family in the country.

Later he married Petronella van Helderen in Alphen (Netherlands) and from there the name spread out.
