TRAMS IN LISBON
Last update May 19th 2003.
In the summer of 2002 en in the spring of 2003 René Weterings and Sandhya Ramcharan went to Lisbon for a week. René took pictures from 2-axelcars, cabletrams, toeristtrams and the new trams of Lisbon.
In 1994 René was there before and 4-axelcars were there from the 300 serie. At the moment one of these cars stays in Amsterdam at the TMA (Tram Museum Amsterdam). In 1994 the new trams 501-510 were not there on lijn 15. In 1995 these 10 new Siemens trams came and the 4-axelcars disappeared. The 45 2-axelcars had a reversion in the years 1996/1997 and became the new serie 541-585.
Nowadays we see this (short) tramlines in Lisbon:
- Lijn 12: Praça Figueira - Praça Figueira (ringline via Mouraria en Alfama)
- Lijn 15: Praça Figueira - Algés, with terminus Belém
- Lijn 18: Rua Alfândega - Cemitério Ajuda
- Lijn 25: Rua Alfândega - C. Ourique (Prazeres), with terminus Estrela
- Lijn 28: Martim Moniz - C. Ourique (Prazeres), with terminus Estrela and Graça
The lines 12, 18 and 25 are on the street until 21:00h. The lowfloortrams go to the depot and the 2-axeltrams come out in the evening. Trams show 'S. Amaro' or 'Reservado' in the destinationblind when they go to the depot. The depot is near tramline 15 next to the Office from Carris, the Lisbon Tramcompagny. René shows you several tramcars in Lisbon.
Near the depot from the tramcompagny Carris is the LisbonTrammuseum. After a visit to the museum there is a short ride with a touristtram to an other building with an exhibition of tramcars and busses.
For the tourists there are several special tramcars for a special tour. The seven-hill-tour is very nice to see.
This is the tramline between Sintra and Ribeira in the neighbourhood of Lisbon. In the depots Sintra and Banzão ? several trams are situated.
After 1995 several old tramcars are still in the neighbourhood of Lisbon. In the park in Oeiras two older 4-axelcars (332 en 333) are there and in the depot Sintra are the 2-axelcars 709 en 737.
In Lisbon there are many hills and small streets. The lines 12 and 28 are not riding very fast in the parts Mouraria and Alfama.
A car from the depot rides to line 25 and leaves the route of line 15/18 to Prazeres. It is not possible for the next tramcar of line lijn 18 to ride further than Corpo Santo and has a temporary terminus overthere. There are some festivities at Pr. do Comercio.
In the morning and evening when a lot of people travel by tram line 15 rides with extra 2-axeltramcars from Praça Figueira to Belém.
As I told you before since 1995 The lowfloortrams from Siemens (501-510) came in service. Most trams have totaladvertisement. In 2002 tram 505 had totaladvert, but in 2003 this was the only tramcar without advert.
To travel from the lower part of Lisbon to the upper parts there are four elevators. Three of them are tramcar-elevators with the nummers 1 and 2 on the trams. One tram is going up and the other one is going down at the same time.
The fourth elevator is situated in the middle of the centre of Lisbon.
At the terminus Belém we see the former trailer 173. This tramcar is a place for tram- and busdrivers.
At the end of this page René shows 3 2-axeltramcars. We see the terminuses Ajuda en Prazeres. The last picture is an old tramcar from the 700-serie (there are still 5 or 6 of this cars). This cars is for traveling with groups. The destinationblind shows 'Aluguer'.
