Lucie van Duyn

Lucie van Duyn

a collection of work, paintings and objects, large and small, by: Lucie van Duyn, 1933-2013 The Hague, The Netherlands

please see more below for more pieces of work by Lucie van Duyn

Lucie van Duijn / Duyn studied at the Royal Art Academie, Koninklijke Academie voor Beeldende Kunsten, Den Haag. Her studio in the 1970's was in the Bilderdijkhofje, Den Haag, amoung other The Hague' artists as Estelle Bilderbeek, Ulla van Ophuysen / Ula van Ophuijsen - Brandes, Piet de Walle en Jaap Eerland. In this small, hidden court of almshouses the Municipal of The Hague, offered artists a studio before destruction of these old, poor and to small houses. Jaap Eerland often visted her during that time and shaw her making several of these works. He remembers her as a beautiful women, who worked with high concentration, sometimes for mounths, on her delicate paintings. Lucie married three times; first with Johan / Johannes Lambertus de Haas (born 1923), they had a son together. In 1968 she married Frans Joseph Godfried baron Van Voorst tot Voorst and in 1977 with Frits Sanders. In between she was deeply in love with Freek / Frederik Hendrik Piket, but Freek Piket could not answer this love in the way she wanted. Some of the works in our collection come from the estate of Frederik Piket, who was an enthusiastic and devoted collector of Dutch art and very much involved with the art scene in The Hague. Lucie van Duyn lived with Frits Sanders in Switserland and the south of France. When this marriage also ended, she became lonely and isolated. A good friend brought her back to The Hague, where she lived until her death in 2013. Lucie was a working member of the art societies: Haagse Kunstkring and Pulchri Studio, both in The Hague. She also anticipated in Studio Scarabee, a theatergroup preforming experimental stage productions. In the extensive book Poppetgom you can find her designs for the set of the play Poppetgom, dating from 1969.

Around 1995 we acquired our first work by Lucie van Duyn, and she bought it from us. This collection has been aquired during a period of 20 years.

A note about the work of Lucie van Duyn. At first glance work of Lucie van Duyn seems illustrative. Pretty and decorative. Looking close one will see how delicate and sometimes with painstaking effort some are created. For example the large circuair painting took her four months of intensive and concentrated work to finsh. Having more work, we can observe in a little broader way. Theme's return. One theme is jurists with their hands in all kinds of gestures. This seems to refer to at least two men she had a relation with and in which circles she then moved. Her second husband, F.J.G. baron Van Voorst tot Voorst, was a advocate generale at the Supreme Court in The Hague and Frederik Piket was a procureur advocate and judge. A second theme are the figures in green surroundings, each figure painted with clear expression; joy, lust or despair, and the third theme of the women with aureole's, often in windows, to my opion refering to the archaic madonna/whore theme, again often with their hands is all kinds of gestures giving expression to their thoughts or reaction to the world they find themselves within.

Lucie van Duyn, 1933-2013, The Netherlands

a collection of work, paintings and objects, large and small, by: Lucie van Duyn, 1933-2013 The Hague, The Netherlands
