January 06, 1970 Boston, Massachusetts Boston Tea Party Second USA tour (started December 18, 1969), Sieb Warner on drums. Small show review in the Fusion Magazine of February 06, 1970: "The Golden Earring, one of Holland's top rockgroups currently on a three month tour of the US, performed at the Boston Tea Party on January 6th. Their musicianship was on a high level and their performance was spectacular. Their set climaxed with a long and frenzied performance of "Eight Miles High" which included one of the most imaginative bass guitar solos ever heard."

Additional info from Greg Vick (TourArchive website USA): With respect to the Boston Tea Party show on January 6, 1970, I have never been able to independently confirm this show other than what you have from Fusion magazine. January 6 was a Tuesday. Most Tea Party shows were Thursday - Saturday. The off night shows were usually big name acts, but I can find no other mention of such a show. The 1970 (late 1969) US tour is odd as I can not find many dates other than the Ludlow Garage dates, the Fillmore West dates, the 4 Detroit, MI area shows and the West Hollywood, CA Whisky dates that I provided. They had to have performed somewhere in New York I would imagine. Oh well I shall keep searching. I will update you as I find more.

Date unknown, 1970 or maybe 1969 London (UK) Probably at the Revolution Club located at Bruton Place, Mayfair While searching on the internet for the never ending tourdates quest I came across a message on the official Golden Earring website. Here is the message: "On 26 Feb 2009 @ 20:02 Shaun Skelly said: Hi Guys. I used to work for Major Minor records as a plugger in 1969/70. For some reason we released 8 Miles High in England, rather than Polydor. I think it sold about 5 copies, thanks to my lousy plugging! You did a 'showcase' gig at ?the Revolution club, which I recall fondly as I think I was the only person from the record company who stayed for the whole gig, the rest couldn't stand the noise! Looking forward to seeing you at the Empire next month - I'd like to think you'll play 'Vince Taylor'... regards Shaun"

I'm now wondering: does anyone know more about this show? Date and so on? If so let me know by e-mail please! Greetings, Casper

Shaun sent me a second email with additional info: ----- Original Message ----- From: Shaun Skelly To: casper.roos@wanadoo.nl Sent: Monday, March 09, 2009 1:52 PM Subject: London 1970 Hi Casper, It was a long time ago – I worked for Major-Minor from November 1969 to August 1970, so I can only assume it would have been in that period. I think the gig was at the Revolution Club, Bruton Place, Mayfair and if my memory is right it was a daytime event, or maybe early evening. Sorry I can’t be more specific, I used to go to a lot of gigs for our label and also with friends who were pluggers from other labels to see ‘their’ bands as well, so it all blurs together! Regards, Shaun

April 4->5, 1970 Den Haag Congresgebouw, Pr. Willem-Alexanderzaal Night show, first show after 2nd USA tour, newspaper review Rotterdams Nieuwsblad April 1970 Golden Earring weer thuis. Sources: Casper's Golden Earring Research, newspaper ad, show review Zierikzeesche Nieuwsbode August 04, 1970, confirmed show

May 27, 1971 Hamburg (Germany) Stadtpark Fan info: Hi Casper! I came across your website and saw that you do not mention this show: Golden Earring live at Stadtpark, Hamburg, May 27th 1971. I have a recording of this show too. It is obviously a different show than the Hamburg 72 bootleg, different setlist. I was given the original reel to reel by the taper in 1998, and have transferred it to CD. The date was not on the reel to reel itself, but there was a newspaper clipping in the box, announcing the show, and it said May 27th 1971. Unfortunately I can´t find that one right now. I am no Earring specialist, but others who know better confirmed this to be a 1971 show. Here is the setlist: The Loner, Flute introduction-->Jam, Song Of A Devil's Servant, You´re Better Off Free, Jangalene /Drum Solo, See See, I´m Gonna Send My Pigeons To The Sky / 8 Miles High Jam Bass Solo / Pigeons (continued), Back Home (cut) Sources: Casper's Golden Earring Research, fan info, confirmed show

August 08, 1971 Jemelle (Belgium) Fetes de la Djote Festival Pop With Soft Creation, Batman, Black Funeral. Michigan, Madscap, Happy Days, Doctor Down Company, Lager Blues Machine, Carriage Company, Jenghiz Khan, Genesis, flyer, ticket 130 BF. Show review: GOLDEN EARRING : LA DÉMESURE Ça tombe dur.

Le show. Amusez-vous, quoi, amusez-vous ! Et défoulez-vous ! Criez, sautez !

April 28, 1972 Schiedam Passage Theater Passage Theater show was cancelled by the band because of lack of technical facilities. Article in Schiedams Stadsblad May 03, 1972: Optreden plotseling afgelast GOLDEN EARRING GAAT AF.

Schiedams Stadsblad - 3 mei 1972

May 12, 1973 Brighton College of Education Support act Third World War, UK fan Pete Crawford send me an e-mail about this so far unknown show: May 06, 2008: Hi Casper,
Great website - I check it all the time. I've got a couple of amendments to the first UK tour. I've been meaning to let you know about these for ages, but you know what it's like - there's always another day! Anyway, here goes - There was a concert at Brighton College of Education on May 12th. I remember it well as my sister was at that college at the time and a group of us left school early and drove down to Brighton. It was the first time I had ever seen GE live and there were probably only about 150 people there. I also met the band as they drove out of the college in their black Mercedes. I remember telling them that I would see them again at the concert at the Black Prince, Bexley the next month, which was ideal as I lived in Bexley! However that concert was actually cancelled as the stage was too small. Since then I have seen them dozens of times and I will be making my annual trip to Tilburg to see them this Friday (the 4th year running) I've also got two tickets for Shepherds Bush next year already. It's fantastic to see them come back to England after over 30 years - I'm sure both dates will be sold out well before the event. Keep up the great work!

Regards & best wishes, Pete Crawford

May 18, 1973 Norwich University of East Anglia Support act Third World War, Review in NME May 19, 1973. page 24: EARRING IS BELIEVING In the wake of Focus, Lindsey Boyd investigates another Dutch band that look set to impress. To people whom think Focus is the only band to emerge from Holland, may I introduce Golden Earring. They have been together for several years but, remarkably, are only just playing their first British tour. They are solidly booked through till June, are gigging all over the country and should cause a few heads to turn in the process. I saw them at a recent reception held by Track records for them and the Third World War and, in contrast to the set-up at most receptions, they were given enough time to play a near-normal set. The audience warmed to them quickly and although it was their first gig here, they performed an exceptionally fine selection of their funky jazz-rock material. Afterwards, as the alcohol was drained and the plumage wilted, I spoke to the band's bass player/organist Rinus Gerritsen. He was pleased with the way the performance had gone although was probably unaware of how catastrophic receptions can be for a band and therefore that Golden Earring had broken the customary barrier very quickly and effectively. "We're not accustomed to such a small stage - or such a small audience," he said. "When you're used to playing to 5000 people it's a bit strange to be faced with just a few." I hastened to point out to him that, however diminutive the size, the gathering's reaction to the band's music should be far from disheartening. As one of Holland's most popular bands - their singles and albums can always be found lurking near the top of the charts there - it's surprising that they have never gigged in Britain before. "We've recorded here in the past," says Rinus, "but never managed to organize a British tour before. That was partly because of permit difficulties, a problem we no longer face. And since we've been involved with Track things have been better organized for us anyway." However, their activities have not been limited to the Dutch market. When they outgrew their homeland they moved into Germany and their popularity throughout Europe resulted in an extensive tour there with The Who. This, Rinus says, was a big boost for the group, a chance to be aired to a wide variety of audiences. (There have even been a couple of lengthy U.S. tours.) The peculiarity of Golden Earring's status here - their arrival on our shores with very little advance publicity at a fairly mature stage in their career - is a reflection of their experiences in the rest of Europe. Said Rinus: "Unlike most groups, we built up our reputation by playing live to people who did not have much idea of what to expect. As a result of these appearances we were able to sell a lot of records. Usually it's the other way round - a band gets a lot of publicity from a record and because of that people go to see them onstage. "We hope to do the same in England - to build up our audiences from scratch." I said I thought that the bands that did make it that way - through the hard slog and the all-important emphasis on the live performance - were the ones who lasted longest in the end. (I rest my case. Ed.) "Yes," he said. "But it takes such a long time to get there." However, it has worked for them on the Continent and I hope it will do the same here. If that first appearance was anything to go by, they deserve to be seen by a lot in their one month in England. During the visit there will be discussions with Track on the nature of their next record release here. Then perhaps, they'll visit us again and we'll know what to expect from what is, at the moment, something of an unknown quantity. May 19, 1973 London London School of Economics (Haugton Street) Support act Longdancer, ticket 50 pence presale\Venue 55 pence. Record Mirror (May 26, 1973) review: "Longdancer/Golden Earring. An Ominously sparse crowd graced the tiny London School of Economics auditorium for what turned out to be a very interesting concert. Despite a total lack of atmosphere Longdancer created their own mood with a really stoned-out set that drew warm response. Though they must be one of the most untogether bunch of performers ever, boy they sound good. They produce amazing harmonies and songs that hook you first time. Golden Earring, in case you haven't heard, is a Dutch band unheard of over here but huge on the Continent. Using quad sound they create a pretty powerful attack on the senses. Basically it's driving rock from bass drums and lead, with singer Barry Hay alternating from guitar to sax and flute. They know how to move and how to use a crowd, but you got the feeling they were playing the wrong type of gig." September 24, 1973 London Marquee (Wardour St W1) Review of this show in New Musical Express October 06, 1973: "Live Golden Earring. Barry Hay, Cesar Zuiderwijk, Rinus Gerritsen and George Kooymans sound impressive and they are. They are the four rockers commonly known as Golden Earring - a Dutch band with an ever-increasing following. Their message is rock and their music is heavy. The Marquee shuddered under the Golden Earring sound and the audience stretched back to the days when loud and earthy entertainment was the in thing. Don't go and see them if it's soft melodie stuff that you're wanting... they're heavy metal kids and it was obvious that the Marquee stage was far too small for their sound. Their stage act looks impressive with Barry Hay prancing about under fluorescent lighting and Rinus Gerritsen twinkling away on the keyboards. Cesar loves to do his spectacular drum piece where he stands up after a solo and does an unusual leap over his drum kit. Unfortunately the tightness of the Marquee playing area didn't really suit him and most of the drums went with him as he did his trip. But the tightness and professionalism of Golden Earring is remarkable, they are as popular as Heineken in Holland and I'm sure they'll be big over here providing they get the right place to perform. By the way their single Radar Love is something to be listened to."

Another review of this show in Sounds magazine October 06, 1973: "Golden Earring." It's not every day that you see a band of colossal continental stature squeezing into London's intimate but legendary Marquee Club armed with eight tons of gear, quadrophonic bins, lights and a follow spot. Seeing Golden Earring playing at the Marquee was a pleasant surprise to a mind conditioned to believe that heavy is horrible. A packed audience of English converts and Dutch compatriots gave Earring a warm welcome and the band quickly made it abundantly clear that dynamic was the key word for the evening. Grwon journalists were seen to wince visibly the shattering power of the million watt PA. Not surprisingly with so much reserve power the sound clarity was perfect and the sea of human flesh rolling before the band pounded and throbbed with the vibrations of the ultimate in ballsy bass sounds. For all their heaviness, Earring have got a class which puts them one step over most other heavy bands. Their sound is fairly funky with some good melodic riffs and intricate playing occasionally featuring electronic effects as an enhancement of the overall rather than a substitute. Added to the audio is the visual and this is something else. Cesar Zuiderwijck not only does good drum solos, he also literally jumps over the whole kit by the light of the silvery strobe and lead singer Barry Hay has a rough aggressive sexual appeal which undoubtedly gets a few girls between the legs (as they say in Suzi Quatro interviews) The band rock in no uncertain terms with a maximum of visual excitement and action. Golden Earring is the product of seven years working together and it shows. You'll be queueing to see them at the Rainbow in a year's time." - PAUL WEIR , magazine show ad

December 01, 1973 Cambridge Corn Exchange setlist, review for this show in Record & radio Mirror: December 08, 1973. Golden Earring. So what about Golden Earring. I'd heard them twice before on their previous tour and once in Amsterdam before venturing up to the unknown pastures of Cambridge Corn Exchange on Saturday evening. It's significant to point out that this is Earring's first major-headlining tour of this country and the confidence is showing in the band and the box office.

Despite the wintry conditions in the hall due to the fuel crisis and all that, the Earring show, using quadrophonic sound was one of fire and excitement - the locals, obviously associating themselves with the band through their latest single Radar Love didn't quite expect the intensity that Earring generated. I found out a couple of new things which I hadn't sussed out before as well. Drummer Cesar Zuiderwijk ain't as ham-fisted as I'd thought and his light touches reminded me of a conductor waving his baton.

Bassman Rinus Gerritsen really got the crowd off with his solo stint. He really manages an incredibly earthy sound and pushes hard on his instrument - both Rinus and Cesar had been slightly indecisive and overshadowed by lead guitarist George Kooymans and vocalist Barry Hay on their last tour.

It boils down to a special kind of individual personality and taste which makes Earring more than just a 'heavy' band. Songs such as Just Like Vince Taylor in comparison with Radar Love show a wide musical range. The act really came together during the latter part of the gig as Barry had been troubled beforehand with bladder trouble and George "just didn't feel right" in his own words.

Despite the sub-zero temperature the sweat was lashing off both the band and audience by the ned and Cesar even managed to do his jumping over the drum kit leap although there was an acute shortage of landing space. It's a pity Earring's first major tour might be affected by the petrol crisis. Apparently they couldn't play Plymouth the next evening because they coulndn't get enough diesel for their equipment truck. A lot of people might miss an incredibly good and professional act - both musically and visually. - John Beattie

March 04, 1974 Birmingham Town Hall With special guest Alquin, setlist, quadrophonic sound equipment problems, review for this show in New Musical Express March 23, 1974:"FRONT ROW REVIEWS Golden Earring\Birmingham There's nothing double Dutch about Golden Earring except that it's incomprehensible how they can be so tight exciting and professional and original at once. And if you need any convincing, it's a case of Earring's believing. Earring were unable to use half of their quad gear at Birmingham Town Hall , the third gig on their current tour, but even so managed to come up with a near perfect set. They're self-indulgent and they wouldn't make the world's top musicians ratings, but they've been around long enough to know their capabilities and stick with them. Take drummer Cesar Zuiderwijk for a start. He's a real exhibitionist, bending over backwards, throwing his sticks into the air and catching them with impeccable timing. He's into parachuting and brings "Radar Love" to a climax, following a high speed drum solo, by vaulting over his kit with the arrogance and poise of a trained athlete. But Earring are not a one man band. There's also Barry Hay, whose distinctive voice tends to overshadow his potentialities on flute and sax, and George Kooymans, who goes a long way towards establishing the band's individuality. The band is completed by Rinus Gerritsen, who did an amazing solo where he pommeled his Danelectro bass into submission, stretched himself out in front of his stacks and finally fell backwards with his bass on top of him as though it were his master. The most endearing quality about them is that once they get an idea they develop it to fruition. And this, above all else, makes them a band definitely well worth 'earring."- Steve Orme. March 05, 1974 Croydon Greyhound Originally planned March 03, 1974, setlist, review for this show in Record Mirror: March 16, 1974: Piercing Earring. The Croydon Greyhound isn't exactly the best rock venue in the country, in fact, I'd rate it amongst the worst because of it's shape and size. It's OK for a band equiped with a small PA and little equipment but when you've got a group like Golden Earring appearing, problems arise. The Dutch lads are currently doing their fourth tour here and it's understandable that they want to present their best stage act with good lights and quad sound etc... At Croydon the Earring gig was cancelled on the Sunday and rescheduled for the following Tuesday because of stage set-up hassles. It became obvious that it wasn't going to be a good gig as soon as the band set foot on the makeshift platform. The hall has more width than length and the usually flexible quad sound seemed to be sandwiched inbetween. Fortunately Earring's lights were up to scratch and lead guitarist George Kooymans was in great form, probably better than I've ever seen him and the enthusiasm seemed to catch on with the others. The fans obviously enjoyed the loud proceedings and unlike previous tours, they were calling for numbers off Earring's Moontan album instead of pleading for Radar Love all night. Extrovert Barry Hay tried his darnest to overcome the vocal sound and drummer Cesar even managed to jump over his kit despite risking the chance of a broken leg on the precarious-looking stage. The audience enjoyed it and I'm sure they went home satisfied but it could have been so much better if the hall had had the right dimensions. The main thing about the show I remember was that it was packed and that before Golden Earring came on stage there were a lot of people sitting down near the front and then a large contingent of real Hell's Angels turned up, there were a lot in the South West in those days, and they generally stomped on the sitting people to get to the front. One of the people they stepped on was a young black guy, a very rare sight in Plymouth in '74, and he said something back to the Angels and they set on him really badly. I don't know if they wanted to recreate Altamont but the atmosphere was very 'heavy' all night!" March 15, 1974 Southend Kursaal Ballroom With special guest Alquin, setlist, ticket 1,1 UK pounds, review for this concert in article Record & Mirror magazine, March 30, 1974 (page 25), Golden Earring: Their girls and groupies.

Golden Earring's dressing room (looking more like Mother Hubbard's empty cupboard) reeks of perspiring bodies. Bottles of Southern Comfort litter the tables and slumped on the various chairs are the four Dutch guys looking decidedly wrecked. This is the aftermath of a concert in Southend and the band are exhausted. They ignore the girls, the promoters and managers who shuffle around consuming a fair amount of booze. Lead guitarist George Kooymans examines his big toe, his left one I think and rubs his swollen ankle, "I sprained it the other day, the ankle I mean," says George smiling. Barry Hay takes great care to clean his Sax properly but drummer Cesar and bass-man Rinus sit staring into open spaces like old men thinking about their lost abilities. But who needs remembrance when there are plenty of 'healthy' young ladies sitting around hopefully waiting to be whisked off to bed by one of the band? The trade name is groupies and I must say they figured quite a lot in our conversation on the way back to London. Over enthusiastic fans? "I love these girls hangin' around and if one is really sweet and she turns me on then I'll take her with me 'cause I love it," says Barry objectively. "But I'm lazy, I don't wanna work for it, that's the problem. I don't want to put myself on a different level, I hate that and I won't do it anymore. "The chick is going to go to bed with you and do something and she's doing it for reasons which I find very hard to accept as a partner. I'm not into using them so I take it easy." Not that Earring's vocalist would turn down an attractive offer, "All I want is a fantastic chick to come up and say, "hey lets get it on," to me and sure we'll just go and have some fun." It's quite difficult to suss out who are the groupies and who are the genuine fans in the Earring dressing room. I've seen familiar faces like the chick that designed the band's special outfits for the Rainbow concert or the unfamiliar schoolgirl fans that stand wetting their knickers just because Barry is actually signing an autograph. "I met this chick in Plymouth," recalls Barry, "and she couldn't have been more than 15 but in five years...? "We invited her round to our flat in London to chat with us one day after breakfast and she was really thrilled, "my friends at school won't believe this," she said. I don't have to rape the birds for something like that to happen. "I get a buzz out of situations like that because you don't have to drag them into bed and make love to them." Judging by Barry's reaction, Earring would probably like to bring their own steady girlfriends on tour with them but for financial reasons, it didn't look possible on this particular tour. "I used to be really wild about that and I still am if I happen to have a chick that is really nice. I couldn't cope with it though if she started moaning about the girl fans we have. It's like a woman who has a carpenter as a husband and doesn't like the bruises on his thumbs."

Naturally the band are very concerned about the image they have with the public. One irritating hassle was a rather dubious comment made by another pop paper about Earring's reaction to a particular photo session. "I'll give you a good line on this one," says Barry, "but it was all a bit exaggerated. Somebody came down and wanted to interview the four of us separately and they said how about pictures and that was fine as long as they were separate shots. We wouldn't pose in a group together because we got up that morning really late and just wore any old garb, for what we thought was just an informal chat day. They could have stuck the four separate pictures together, we try to see it in an art way too and I just didn't want to come across as a nitty - gritty woodcutter so they were offended." The band has had some sound problems as well but I tend to put the blame on the type of halls that they've been performing in. The Southend gig was a typical example. The arena was something like a dome, particularly unsuited for the band's quad gear and on some numbers, the sound seemed to disappear 20 or 30 feet up to the ceiling without really circling below as intended. "I'm really ambitious on sound because it's an extra dimension, that's one of the reasons why we adopted the quadraphonic system - it happens to circulate the sound, at least that's what it should do and I think it's nicer for the people." A few years ago the Dutch group wouldn't even have considered any complicated system but as Barry put it, "the band has evolved at a ridiculous speed, we've always advanced technically but we reached a point where it's getting highly satisfactory the more we learn the quicker we get on. I notice it in my flute playing and singing." A couple of months back, Golden Earring decided that the best way to project themselves in the public eye, would be to come across as a unit. "It didn't turn out that way. We're completely different human beings, we have our own tastes and we're each into different things so we move with complete freedom. "Sometimes because we're so different, we find it really hard to get together about an idea and we usually always agree on the best alternative. Whoever comes up with it, doesn't matter because we've got a pretty good communication system with each other. " Barry seemed eager to announce that Earring's next single will be a number called Instant Poetry although it hasn't been decided yet. "Some say we haven't decided we really don't have an alternative to release. In my opinion we've recorded a song that we really like and we've got tours in Spain and the States coming up. I just don't wanna wait that long for another single." Kooymans and Hay Co. wrote Instant Poetry and I'm lead to believe, unlike Radar Love, that it's based on reality rather than fantasy. "I mean Radar Love was not a thing that we could play anytime, we had to feel it. It was unreal but Instant Poetry is about washing machines, cars and robots, the reality of modern-day living in other words. It's a great song to dance to and the basic structure of the song reminds me of Radar Love. It's not a bad choice and it's the way that I'd really like to present our singles."

Earring's next album should be interesting now that the band have a hit single under their belt and they have been accepted in this country. Hearing Earring, their first album released here was a mixture of ideas with none of them being particularly original. However the production work wasn't too bad considering the band were mixing five tracks a day! Moontan, the second album was a progression showing more of the individual talents of the band and so the third should prove the most vital to date. "We're getting really critical about recordings and I think we're going to be hypercritical about the next one. I just want to bring out an album which is absolutely fantastic, OK?" The thing about Earring is that they've reached a point of no return, they could perhaps turn out as one - hit wonders but on the other hand ….? Well I tend to believe in the latter whatever it may be even if they don't particularly care for the groupies and I do. John Beattie

They got a great response from the crowd. Golden Earring were really late on cos, as they said to the crowd, "We were watching Star Trek!!" After the drum solo on Radar Love, the drummer stood on his stool and did a somersault over his kit, fell off the stage and landed in the crowd. What a cheer. March 25, 1974 London Rainbow setlist, review of this show in New Musical Express March 30, 1974: "FRONT ROW REVIEWS Golden Earring/Rainbow. Last gig of the British tour - probably the most prestigious place to play and wouldn't you know they had equipment hassles. Late going on; an audience fed up with waiting; a sound system definitely below par. It would appear the evening was wrecked for Golden Earring. Starting with "She Flies On Strange Wings" (sound definitely bad) after which I personally would have given up. But then Earring, with their dogged Dutch determination and years of hassles behind them (presumably) don't let small details put them off. Soon, the sound was better and throughout all they appeared unruffled by apparently superficial difficulties. Frontman Barry Hay looking like a latter day tart, wearing horrid sun glasses and a star-apparent stance uses saxophone to great effect. When he's not playing it he plays with it - very sensuous. "Just Like Vince Taylor" sees Hay, once more doing his star trip acting out the role of a rock 'n roll idol, hand on hip, twitching his torso and bum around. Atually Hay is abot the only pseudo-sex symbol around at the moment without the pre-arranged "get 'em at it" tactics. He looks like he was born on stage and has worked on one since. "Radar Love" is obviously the killer number. And as the strains start a large majority of the crowd charge to the front of the stage, clapping their hands after encouragement from guitarist George Kooymans. George is a pretty cool guy actually, who plays very tasteful guitar, yet allows Hay to take the limelight. Very hip arrangement that. Anyway "Radar Love" is the number where the drummer among others does his pieces. He's allowed a certain amount of time doing his solo, while everyone claps. The old strobe light is put to effective use to make sure we're all certain he is the one to look at - and then, amid a cloud of pink\red smoke he leaps skywards and over his drum kit. Could have been an anti-climax after "Radar Love" but with smoke culminating in the hall and the red lights\blue lights switched on the band (giving them a horror movie effect) the rest of the set is hypnotic. Bass player Rinus, gets his opportunity to hog the lime\smoke - light and good old George does his special stint for the encore "Money". 'Ear ole are a band I've never witnessed before. They are above all, totally professional. Singer Barry is already a star - it's all so together it almost makes you want to have your ears pierced, again. - Julie Webb" Sources: Casper's Golden Earring Research, review in New Musical Express March 30, 1974, confirmed show

May 08, 1974 Northampton, Pennsylvania Roxy Theatre Golden Earring headliner 2 (sold out) shows per evening, setlist, e-mail info Andy Brown: Hello Casper, Compliments on your web site. It is clearly a labor of love and many fans surely appreciate the great detail you have provided. In 1974 I worked as the all night DJ at a progressive rock station in Allentown, Pennsyvania. WSAN also held inexpensive small venue concerts during the mid 1970's. As you have detailed on your site, Golden Earring headlined four sold out shows at the Roxy Theater in nearby Northhampton, Pennsylvania, where WSAN held most of their concerts on May 8th and 9th in 1974. Golden Earring's third U.S. tour to promote their recent Moontan album, which everyone at our station played and loved, was the first time I had ever seen Golden Earring, although I had become aware of them from back when their cover of Eight Miles High hit the airwaves in America (I was in high school).

Anyway, the early U.S. release of Moontan on Track/MCA had the exotic semi nude dancer on the cover (we used to call her The Vanilla Queen). The station received a few dozen promotional copies of this album. After Radar Love really took off, the cover was changed. Nonetheless, there were a limited amount of these promotional copies for radio stations that contained a poster with a nude female torso with an ear with a golden earring superimposed into the navel of the torso. My album is long ago liquidated (I had too many vinyls and most weren't collectibles and when I got tired of moving them from abode to abode, I sold them all). Regards, Andy Brown

May 10, 1974 Flint, Michigan I.M.A. Auditorium Opener for Frank Zappa? Zappa fansite mentioned Golden Earring probably cancelled, King Crimson fan Alex Barry Jr. info: Hi Casper, I just visited your site dedicated to the history of Golden Earring and I congratulate you on its depth of research. I would like to suggest a correction however. I believe the May 10th, 1974 gig may not have been in Flint, Michigan, as shown. On May 9th, 1974 the band performed the Roxy Theater in Northampton, Pennsylvania (I was there for both shows, and the band was great!), and on May 11th they were in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, which is about 60 miles south of Northampton. For them to have performed in Flint on the intervening 10th, they would have had about a 1250 mile round-trip from Northampton to Flint and then back to Philadelphia. That would have been quite a long trip for just one show. And since you indicate some uncertainty for Jun 3rd when they seem to have been back in Flint, maybe the correct date for the Flint gig is in fact June 3rd, which fits in well with the Ohio gig the next night, only about 110 miles away. Do I make sense?

By the way, I also saw the band on June 28th 1974 at The Casino in Asbury Park, opening for my fave band of all time, King Crimson. I read your Melody Maker review for their show with King Crimson on July 1st in Central Park, and it’s so unfortunate when promoters pair up bands that are so dissimilar and with such different fan bases. I once saw King Crimson open for J Geils Band and Humble Pie in Philadelphia, and let me assure you, THAT was a seriously poor combination of acts! KC was nearly booed off the stage by the hard rock fans there for J Geils and HP. So, it works both ways. Take care and keep up the great work! S. Alex Barry Jr.

May 25, 1974 San Francisco, California Winterland Opener for Robin Trower, with Sha Na Na, setlist, Internet blog review by David E Miller of Golden Earring show Winterland, San Francisco on May 25, 1974. The Golden Earrings (later changed to Golden Earring) were formed by George Kooymans (guitar, vocals) and Rinus Gerritsen (bass, keyboards) in the Netherlands, in the early 1960s. Several singers and drummers passed in and out of the band during the next few years, but at the beginning of the 1970s, there was a steady lineup of George Kooymans, Rinus Gerritsen, Barry Hay (vocals, guitar, flute), and Cesar Zuiderwijk (drums).

Golden Earring, in common with most bands in Europe, started out by looking to the UK and the USA for musical inspiration, before finding their own direction. Their first album, Just Earrings, was released in 1965, followed by Winter Harvest in 1967 and Miracle Mirror in 1968. In 1969, after establishing their name in the Netherlands, they undertook their first tour of America, supporting Led Zeppelin and other famous bands. During the early 1970s, they toured Europe in support of The Who. In 1973, Golden Earring achieved a breakthrough when "Radar Love," a single taken from their album, Moontan, became a major hit in Europe, the UK, and the USA. On the strength of that hit, they became more widely known and toured extensively. Golden Earring had sharp abilities as performers, displaying the sort of practiced showmanship that results from many years on the road. Barry Hay was an active figure on stage, singing and playing his flute with vigorous flair. George Kooymans was an expert guitarist, slick and forceful, but careful not to overplay. The bass of Rinus Gerritsen and the drums of Cesar Zuiderwijk provided a strong underpinning for the overall sound.

David Miller: We waited all day and, once again, were able to be right at the front of the stage at Winterland. Golden Earring was the opening act. Robin Trower followed, with Sha Na Na topping the bill. We left before Sha Na Na came on stage. Golden Earring had hit the charts with "Radar Love." That was the only song of theirs that I had ever heard, so I didn't know what to expect from a Dutch rock band. They were dressed slick. They performed very tight and rocked hard. I remember the intensity they dispedisplayed the sweat streaming down their faces. The vocals sounded English. It was difficult to believe they were from the Netherlands. Barry Hay, the singer, performed the flute. That seemed a little unusual for a guy with his macho look. I remember the crowd cheering when the drummer started the beat of "Radar Love." The crowd surged forward and pressed me up against the stage. They were bouncing to the beat. Between singing and playing his flute, Barry Hay would pantomime driving a car. At the end of the song, the drummer shot up in the air over his drums with an explosion behind him. That was very exciting. I managed to photograph part of him as he was airborne. I thought he was going to land on top of me! They were an excellent live band. I had a great time photographing their performance. They looked sharp and the lighting was perfect. The photos turned out to be some of the best that I ever got.

Michael: Golden Earring put on a great performance at Winterland. Although they were Dutch, they had many of the same qualities that I had seen in British bands. They were flashy and exciting, making the most of their time on stage, and they clearly knew how to engage an audience. Barry Hay, the singer, worked hard to keep things moving from one song to the next. He frequently did a funny sort of dance, playfully moving from one side of the stage to the other, and with his curly hair and flute, he made me think of the Greek god, Pan. George Kooymans also worked hard with his guitar, and looked particularly good in his leather pants and stylish jacket. After their final song, there was a burst of light and smoke behind the drummer, Cesar Zuiderwijk. At the same moment, he jumped forward, over his drums, and landed on his feet at the front of the stage. It was an amazing thing to see.

July 01, 1974 New York, New York Wollman Memorial Ice Rink (In Central Park) Opener for King Crimson, setlist, show review in interview Melody Maker July 13, 1974 Earring: Flashy assault. Last week's Earring show in Central Park, one of the Schaeffer Music Festival Series was hardly a winner. Supporting King Crimson, they were given a particularly hard time by the serious minded Crimson audience. Coupled with a faulty PA, the bad vibes resulted in a few beer cans being chucked at the band and a far from enthusiastic ovation at the end. It wasn't the most sensible of couplings for Crimson fans abhor theatrics in much the same way as fans of the brasher bands abhor lengthy improvisation and an over serious attitude to the proceedings. It was an oil and water situation, but the Earrings made the best they could and shrugged off the concert next day as "one of those things". New York Magazine: Monday 1: at 6.30 PM King Crimson and Golden Earring are featured at the Music Festival at Central Park's Wollman Rink. If it rains, it's tomorrow at 5.30 PM. July 03, 1974 Houston, Texas Sam Houston Coliseum (concert review in Melody maker July 20, 1974) Support acts Poco & Golden Earring opening for Procol Harum, review Houston Post, setlist, ticket, show grossed $12,954 for Poco of $59,000 potential. (Promotor: Howard Stein), concert in review in the Houston Post, July 1974 Coliseum concert contains surprises. PROCOL HARUM: English rock band performed in concert Wednesday night in the Sam Houston Coliseum. Also on the bill, Golden Earring and Poco. A Howard Stein production. This one had something for everybody, hard-rocking antics for young teens (and teens-at-heart) from Dutch group Golden Earring; rockin’-chair-country-styled sounds from Poco for those who prefer more breezy, finally, smiling music and, well-orchestrated pieces for more 'serious students' from Procol Harum. All of these potential promises were delivered in a concert that stretched, groaningly, over a four-hour time span, bringing in the Fourth [of July, a public holiday in America] with pleasing, if somewhat subdued, colors. Despite the length (and that numbing sensation that comes from too long a time in a folding chair), some surprises were issued up, too – notably, by the first two bands. Golden Earring, Holland-based and making their first US tour, proved to be a show group of outstanding potential. They are NOT, by any stretch of the imagination, a great group - their solos ranged, for example, from workmanlike to lurchingly demented but they DO possess enough stageflash and tense ensemble work to make you glad to be there. July 12, 1974 Cleveland, Ohio Allen Theatre With Brownsville station, review at Golden Earring Museum, setlist, concert poster, review in Cleveland Press, July 19, 1974 "We're really going to blow them off the stage" In my eight years of covering the national rock music scene, that's the quote I've heard most often. It usually comes from the manager of an opening act who's desperate for publicity. The manager explains his act is much stronger than the headliner. It never is. Golden Earring is the exception. You can count on one hand the number of rock groups in the world capable of topping tons explosive new group from Holland. Currently on its first major tour in the U.S., Golden Earring has been the opening act for a number of top recording groups. From the reviews I've read, no one has been able to follow them. Among the groups the Earring has upstaged are ZZ Top, Procol Harum, J. Geils, Marshall Tucker, the Doobie Brothers and last Friday night at the Allen, Brownsville Station. Combining electrifying theatrics and acrobatics with a very sophisticated blend of rock 'n' roll. Golden Earring put together the finest stage show by a new act that I ever saw. In fact, I'd have to think awfully hard to come up with an "old" act that is capable of giving a better performance. Each musician in Golden Earring is a star. Together, they're dynamite. The audience is given a double treat of watching a spectacular show and listening to some classic rock. Flutist Barry Hay has to be made out of rubber. Besides bending his body in every position imaginable while singing, he's, brilliant on guitar, sax and any percussion instrument that's available. I usually hate drum solos, but Cesar Zuiderwijk made me love them. During an extended version of the group's smash hit, "Radar Love," Cesar showed what drumming's all about. He completed his already spectacular show with an unbelievable eight-foot leap over his drums. Just when I thought nothing could top Cesar's performance, bassist-keyboardist Rinus Gerritsen put on a demonstration that I still don't believe I saw. He made his bass guitar do everything but talk, and completed this super solo by deservedly collapsing flat on his back. It was the only time during the group's 50 minutes of playing that one of the four musicians wasn't moving. Guitarist George Kooymans - who executed a variety of leaps and glides throughout the performance - ended the show with a Beatles' version of "Money" that included a few Chuck Berry hops far good measure. Fans in the audience went wild. We all stood and screamed for more, but the Earring already had performed longer than the time limit set for an opening act. The fans remained standing and lit matches in appreciation. It was quite a sight. At this point I felt very sorry for Brownville. There was no way that they were going to follow this act. They should be credited for trying, however. They did everything from passing out party favors to having motorcycles revving up on stage to get the audience to respond. Nothing worked. Like their two-million selling hit says, they would have been better off "Smokin' in the Boys' Room." If you're lucky enough to catch the Golden Earring in concert, better clip out the photo on this page see what the musicians look like. On stage - like the other photo from last week's concert shows-they're a blur. But the music is the most important thing, and Golden Earring's MCA Track album "Moontan" is audible proof that this will be the next supergroup. One of the most powerful rock music forces to ever emerge from the Netherlands, Golden Earring is one of few bands to achieve international chart success in three consecutive decades, first with their hit cover of the Byrds "Eight Miles High" in 1969, followed by "Radar Love" in 1973 and "Twilight Zone" in 1982. The latter two remain staples of classic rock radio today. As a band never content to follow any formula for very long, they approached each album like a new enterprise, often reinventing their music. In 1973, they released their most popular album, Moontan, which gained them a much larger fan base and allowed them to tour internationally as a headliner (with Kiss and Aerosmith among their opening acts).

This performance, recorded Cobo Arena in Detroit, captures the band the year after the release of Moontan album. Golden Earring kicks the set off with "She Flies On Strange Wings," the George Kooymans-penned opus that became the single from their 1971 album, Seven Tears. Originally divided into two parts on the single, here it is expanded even further, clocking in at over ten minutes. Next up is "Big Tree, Blue Sea," a song originally featured on their self-titled 1970 album that was revamped with an additional flute arrangement for Moontan. This is another highly adventurous modular piece, with obvious similarities to later era Jethro Tull and having a distinct progressive-rock bent. Initially mixing electronics and flute over a delicate groove, this eventually develops into a lengthy hard rocking guitar workout.

Nowhere is the band’s enthusiasm better reflected than on "Radar Love." This highly ambitious number is Golden Earring’s biggest hit, and they perform with ferocity, displaying what they really are capable of in a live capacity. The song, of course, would of course go on to become a career defining moment for the group. The 50-minute set concludes with “I’m Going To Send My Pigeons To The Sky” from their 1970 self-titled release.

November 12, 1974 London Old Grey Whistle Test TV show Two songs performed: Candy's Going Bad & Love Is A Rodeo, Magazine article Sounds November 23, 1974 - page 11: Oh yes, Earring are still around
Pete Makowski has a bite and a chat with Golden Earring before rehearsals for their British tour. "Somebody ought to give that guy a kick in the balls," said Golden Earring's George Kooymans regarding Bob Harris's critical comments when the band appeared on 'The Old Grey Whistle Test'. "Everyone's entitled to their own opinion but I'm not sure if an announcer should do more than announce the bands. It's like the announcer at a concert saying 'and now for the shittiest band in the world Golden Earring'. It wouldn't be right." Still despite that, there is a whole hunk of people who do like the band and they have worked hard to establish their position as one of the leading rock bands, in fact the first Dutch rock band. They've earned them selves a solid reputation for hard work and entertainment. The group are currently touring Britain and I managed to catch a few words with George and Robert Jan Stips over a meal before they went into rehearsals.

Gold
The group have recently returned from the second leg of their American tour which collectively amounted to a total of eighty dates which has proved to be successful, they have returned with a gold album and two chart singles. Kooymans is an amiable character who looks younger than his years and is a nervous bundle of energy, constantly moving back and forth with almost childlike enthusiasm, when answering questions. Stips looks even younger and seems quite unaffected by his sudden plunge into success. In fact the whole of Earring have a sobering level headed attitude to their new found success.

Superstar
They take their ten year slog in their stride and accept it as a form of schooling into professionalism. Even now, Kooymans points out, the band want to take careful steps and not let things go to their head. "Sure it does a lot for your ego playing headline concerts but it's no good if not many people turn up. We don't want that kind of superstar trip. In America we would only headline if we knew that we could fill the place." And they did.

Tighten up
I asked George how the audiences reacted to the band. "At first they didn't know any of the numbers but soon they were familiar with 'RADAR LOVE', next time it was much better they knew all the songs." Recently in America European bands have become immensely popular and Earring received a lot of attention from the Press. "They were interested in us initially because we sang our songs in English, which is understandable. I'm sure if there was a British band that song Dutch lyrics touring Holland the same would happen." Earring have toured the States previously in '69 and '70 but this only amounted to a few scattered club dates and couple of nights at the Fillmore. "This time the whole thing was organized much better. I think it has tightened the band up. I really wouldn't mind living in America, it has everything you want. One of the noticeable things is the music. You can turn on a radio and hear good music all the time while in Holland the radio stations play shit. There aren't any pirate stations anymore and even then they weren't much better. The stations in Britain aren't all that good either. People say there isn't much new talent coming out of Holland. It's not surprising when a kid turns on the radio and all he has is that shit to listen to - where can he turn to for his influences?" Where did George turn for his guitar influences? "I don't listen to the guitarists, I just listen to the music. If I started listening to the guitarist it would get me frustrated thinking how much better they are." On the second half of their American tour the band introduced their new keyboards man Robert. He formerly performed with a Dutch band called Supersister, who many people compared to Soft Machine. They recorded a couple of albums on Uncle Peel's Dandelion label. "Rinus used to play the keyboards but we realized that we needed something to fill out the sound," said George. "They asked me to join the same day our band split up," added Stips enthusiastically. Golden Earring was a totally different kettle of fish to Supersister. "Yes," agreed Stips, "but it's something I've wanted to do for a long time."

Absurdia
In between touring the band have managed to lay some tracks down for their forthcoming album tentatively titled "Up & Down Absurdia". "We've still got a lot of backing tracks to lay down, we're not really sure of the title," admitted George, "it changes every day but we're thinking about it. The tracks are much shorter on this album, tighter, I really like it." "Candy's Going Bad" has been lifted off the band's "MOONTAN" album and has been released as a single to commemorate the band's tour. "We were going to do a new show to go with the album, but as it's not ready yet we can't, although we will be featuring some new material. This tour's just to let people know we're still around."

November 14, 1974 Glasgow Apollo Theatre Special guest Lynyrd Skynyrd, ticket, review in Melody Maker November 23, 1974: Golden Earring\Lynyrd Skynyrd. Playing a rock concert can be a bit like playing roulette - there is a good chance that any band, no matter how professional, will have a bad night. So when Golden Earring and Lynyrd Skynyrd performed the Apollo in Glasgow last week it was a win for Skynyrd but the numbers wouldn't come up for Earring. Skynyrd's tight sound identified them immediately as an American band. They have a lot in common with the Doobies or Little Feat in the punch and cleanliness of their sound, but they also share a lot with the Allmans. The confederate flag above the stage is as much a gesture of southern musical solidarity as it is a crowd pleaser. Their set was flabby in places , occasionally brilliant but not taking off until their last number. Three guitars wove a tapestry of complex licks and took the audience soaring to a high which had seldom been equalled at the Apollo. But Earring's image was a mistake even if they had suffered no sound problem. A Glasgow heavy rock-audience expects their band to be in denim with hair down to their fret boards. Earring present a glitter image, and maybe it is good that they have avoided the denim cliche. But they audience didn't take too kindly to the flash and the rather pretentious tempo changes in the opening numbers. The only number which really worked was the encore "Money". They seemed at home with the 3-minute format, extending it and doing some impressive bass work. "Radar Love," their own 3-minute song was filled with long boring solos. It is difficult to avoid (rest of the article is missing. Does anyone have the missing text? Please share it with me!)

Another UK magazine review for this show (unknown origin) Golden Earring/Glasgow If thier gig at the Glasgow Apollo is any yardstick, it seems Golden Earring are a classic example of just how easily a band can blow their musical validity purely by becoming to involved with image making. It can have been much more than a year ago that I personally believed they could potentially become one of the finest bands to come out of Europe. Then, the music was an gritty boogie rock, and purely because of their capabilities their act was both musically sound and invigorating. Now, with the addition of a fifth member, keyboard player Robert Jan Stips, their music has deteriorated to sheer heavy metal rock which is concerned with excessive volume rather than instrumental virtuosity. And their performance is not assisted by the arrogant posing of the singer, Barry Hay, or the dramatic ploys of the drummer, Cesar Zuiderwijk, who vaulted over his kit on cue with a blinding and deafening explosion of white light. Later the kit collapsed and the act deteriorated into pure farce. It's unfortunate this should be the case because Earring still have a great deal of talent. During "Big Tree Blue Sea" there was some consistently good flute work by Hay, and George Kooyman on guitar took some startling solos. But then the act was designed to give visual and dramatic impact and the priorities became distorted. Bass player Reinus Gerritsen sounded as though he was playing his instrument with a bread knife, while suggesting, because of his stance, that the bass was to heavy for him to hold anyway. Even with the inclusion of such Earring standards as "Radar Love" and "Vanilla Queen" the band failed to upgrade the standard of the set, although the high energy noise appealed to a good proportion of the audience. Musically, however, Golden Earring are slipping into a Heavy Metal straightjacket and are losing what was a distinctive style. Lynyrd Skynyrd (whom you read last week) was superior by far to the main act. Which made Earring look even worse than the were.

Because although most of them speak English, most of them are also deaf. Well that's the only logical explanation I can come up with for the glass shattering decibel barrage Dutch band Golden Earring pass off for audible sound. Loud isn't the word really, there are no words to describe it because you're unable to hear yourself think nevermind speak. But even though I made a complete nonsense of the elaborate multi decked sound balance by sticking a finger in my ear, what filtered quietly through was good stuff.

Visually the band are very exciting. What with lead singer Barry Hay, leather pant posturing, guitarist George Kooymans' athletic leaping and of course drummer Cesar Zuiderwijk's kit leap at the end, there's plenty of sweat flying about. And when they launch into a fast rocker - not infrequently - a lot of that energy comes out in their music.

On stage the band is a seven piece - vocalist, lead guitarist, keyboards, bass, drums and a couple of horns. The basic principle with Earring is to layer the lead guitar underneath the blaring horns and with the usual accompaniment, stick Hay's vocals on top.

The construction of most songs is very simple leaving plenty of rope for individual elaboration. Rarely do they use that rope to hang themselves. Only the drum solo and bass solo fell a bit flat, neither instrument is really meant to go it alone, and neither is capable of holding prolonged attention. But those were the low points. The highlight of course was Radar Love, even though it contained the drumsolo. On stage they fill it out. There's the basic essence of the single still detectable, plus a roaring instrumental rocker on top.

This style contrasts vividly with their more cosmic material, like Big Tree Blue Sea which has flute echoes and everything. But at the end of all those type of numbers they always come back to the rock. The majority of the set was used to showcase their latest album Switch, the title track of which follows current trends by including a bit of funk. Like the other tracks it ultimately returns to Earring's staple diet of rock. Daddy's Gonna Save My Soul builds up in a crescendo and blooms out into a foot tapper - Can't Get A Hold On Her the same. Even Vanilla Queen, which sounded bottled up because of it's restricted chord changes, drove a stomping beat.

Now even in London audiences would be up on their feet by now, but in Amsterdam they don't do things like that. Not even a head shake - nothing. Funny thing was just as I noticed the lack of activity they started clapping along to Ce Soir, the single taken from the Switch album. Wow I thought, what a concession. Supposedly it must be disconcerting for a Dutch audience to hear a band in their home country singing in English, not that you could understand much of the lyrics anyway. Earring's concession was to announce the tracks in Dutch, so the between track speil turned into a Radio Caroline sift-the-track competition. Anyway we managed to overcome it in the end and so did the audience shouting in fluent English "We want more" at the end of the set. You just can't win. Martin Thorpe.

April 05, 1975 Cleveland, Ohio Public Auditorium (First scheduled Allen Theatre) Golden Earring and Peter Frampton support act for Lynyrs Skynyrd. Trevor Myers reported different venue: Music Hall instead of the smaller Allen Theatre. Dear Casper: I was browsing and I was at the Cleveland concert listed as follows April 05, 1975 Cleveland, Ohio - Allen Theatre (Source magazine ad) It was not at the Allen Theater it was at Music Hall (a much bigger venue). GE was the warm up band with Peter Frampton for Lynyrd Skynyrd. It was a great concert with the lead singer for Golden Earring jumping on a mini tramp. Peter Frampton was not big yet. Also Skynerd had the original band with Ed King. Great Concert!! Trevor Myers Second email by Trevor Myers: Casper sorry, I did not keep the ticket. Unfortunately, I threw a lot of memorabilia away after my younger days. I wish I had it today! I can assure you I remember this concert well. I went with a group of High school buddies and it was one of the best I ever saw. THE correction- The concert was in Public Hall (they called it Public Auditorium too). The reason I was confused was because there was a Music Hall that was smaller and really better for music. Public Hall was the bigger of the two. Here is the link to Public Hall. As you can see by the ticket on the website it was known by two name. I also saw my first concert by the Allman Brother in Public Hall. SORRY FOR THE CONFUSION!! I was on the left hand side of the Hall in the upper deck for the concert. I had a great view. As mentioned, if you were far back on the floor it was hard to see. http://en.wikipedia.org /wiki/Public_Auditorium By the way, the Allen Theater is in Playhouse square and much smaller than Public Hall. This concert was not held there. It was not as commonly used for major rock concerts in the 70's. Thanks and good luck with your website. I am an Allman Brothers Fan and there is a guy who keeps up a Duane Allman site from the Netherlands. It is awesome, so I really appreciate the love and work you put into the site about Golden Earring for fans. All the best. Trevor Myers Source: magazine ad

I was at the Golden Earring concerts at Massey Hall in 1975, I believe it was and 1983, if I have the years right. The support act in 1975 was a band called Goddo and the support in 1983 was Rick Santers band also Johnny Winter. One show at Massey Hall was May 28th, however the year isn't on the ticket, I am assuming it is 1975 as the setlist looks right. This is the show Goddo opened for them. Also on the ticket, only the last two letters of the band's name are visible "ng" The cost was $5.50 I hope this helps in a small way to your concerts page. Thanks, take it EZ, Ian S. January 31, 1976 Rotterdam Ahoy Large mirror behind band, 2 sets, quadrofonic sound, 8000 visitors, sold out, Newspaper review: Golden Earring voor eigen parochie. Linda Mallon send me this info: Hi Casper, great site been on it for hours -just so interesting! I would like to bring to your attention the cancelled tour date for Hammersmith London in 1976, it was definitely on Wednesday the 25th of February. I know I travelled down from Glasgow to see the guys (8 hours on a very slow train) and cried bitterly when it didn't go ahead. In fact I was so angry I phoned up Track Records and demanded to speak to Freddie Haayen to find out what the hell was going on!!!!! Needless to say I didn't get to talk to him, only got the tea boy and he didn't have a clue. Keep up the good work. Linda Mallon Show was cancelled due to flu Barry Hay and Cesar Zuiderwijkl! April 24, 1976 Baltimore County, Maryland Painter's Mill Music Fair Golden Earring with special guest Thin Lizzy and The Cate Brothers, ticket US$ 6 presale\Venue US$ 7, Handbill, show advert, show info with message to Thin Lizzy Fansite Webmaster Peter Nielsen: Saturday, April 24, 1976. Cactus Productions w/ Hal Abramson. co-promoted with Multi-Media Concepts The internet brings miracles! So cool to hear of you and this great work you are doing. At the time, my company, Cactus Productions, Inc. of Las Vegas was partnered with Marc Corwin and Multi Media Concepts. Golden Earring was the headliner, then Thin Lizzy, then The Cate Brothers The show was at the 2,500 seat in-the-round Painters Mill Music Fair in Baltimore County, Maryland in an area called Owings Mills. This venue is no longer there.

Tickets were $6.00 in advance, $7.00 at the door. Don't think we sold out but probably around 1,800 - 2,000 attended. I was in the front row with a bottle of Jack Daniels and remember how powerful the band was. It WAS a magical show. Met the boys backstage and I remember getting a call from the hotel, something about somebody throwing a TV out the hotel room window, but not sure which band that was. I remember wearing a plaid suit. we dressed up back then. I lived just a couple miles away from the venue and put on about 6 concerts there. Jailbreak was getting airplay on local FM station. I thought the band was professional the way they handled themselves and being a young guy still learning the business, realized the historic nature of what I was experiencing. we really rocked that night!

I looked like I was 14 then about 125 pounds, and 4 months later promoted Stompin 76, one of the biggest music festivals in US history, see www.stompin76.com Sorry, I have no ticket from that event, but attached here, see the black and white handbill and a small print ad that appeared in the Baltimore Sun for about 5 weeks. The entire event budget was about $12-14,000. back then. March 25, 1977 London (UK) Rainbow Radio Capitol benefit concert, special guest Widowmaker, live broadcast & live lp recordings, tickets 2\1,50 \1 UK pounds, Hitkrant magazine article April 15, 1977: Earring speelt Rainbow plat. September 03, 1977 Scheessel (Germany) Speedway stadion Eichenring First Rider Open Air Festival Ticket, with Long Tall Ernie & The Shakers, Vandergraaff generator Colloseum II, Camel. Many groups on the bill but never performed due to failing organisation, riots one hour after Golden Earring closed the concert due to many not playing bands ending up in burning down the festial stage1. visitor information: Golden Earring were the last gig in the night, and, towards the end people called "Hey, the Angels have left, come on, we can freely enter the stage no." So we went on stage, standing bumptiously round the band in a semi-circle, and they went for their encore: Radar Love, what else. Then the band quickly left and we people also left the stage heading back into the crowd to party some more. Soon afterwards the stage went up in flames. What a night! And what a pity the festival didn't run as scheduled over the whole weekeend and with all those announced top acts, remember for example Steppenwolf?

Was waren die Ursachen? Angekündigt war u. a. Etwa 20 Verletzte will Gemeindebrandmeister Peters gezählt haben. Newspaper review of the Scheessel Germany 1977 festival disaster

November 21, 1978 Syracuse, New York War Memorial Auditorium Opener for Aerosmith, but Aerosmith show cancelled due to emergency landing of Aerosmith plane back into Boston; the show is rescheduled at a later date, Golden Earring did perform for one hour! Aerosmith fan info about this show: November 21, 1978 The date you have about Aerosmith canceling is true. But, Golden Earring was already on stage and performed for about 90 minutes with a 20+ minute version of Radar Love. The band streched it out as long as possible as Aerosmith's management was holding out hope that they would arrive. The show was canceled about one hour after Golden Earring finished with the announcer stating Aerosmith's plane had caught fire and had to return to Boston. Of course now we all know they were just too stoned to come out and play. Thank you for your website, I am trying to pin down the date Aerosmith came back. Thanks, Brian Sources: Casper's Golden Earring Research, Aerosmith fan info
