The unofficial Golden Earring Tour dates listing

LAST UPDATE: February 12, 2019 This page is updated!

These pages contain the tour dates that I have collected from Golden Earring's first concerts in the early Sixties untill the present date. This is by no means a 100% accurate list (at least not pre 1999). If you have any information about a concert that is not listed, or a correction, please let me know. However when submitting an addition or correction, if possible please provide me with some proof of a certain concert, like a ticket stub, a flyer or an advertisement. If you have information about a date that's not listed, or a correction, let me know. However, if possible please have some concrete information available before submitting an addition/correction. Don't just say "Oh, I think they played here, on this date. Please have some proof of the date other than just "I remember it" - a ticket stub, flyer or an advert would be optimal.

Please note that retrieving dates from the (early) Sixties is hard and almost impossible. However thanks to research Jan Sander did while interviewing former band members Fred van der Hilst, Hans van Herwerden, Peter de Ronde and Frans Krassenburg several shows were found and these are listed below. Hans van Herwerden stated the band never performed under the name 'The Tornados' and as he was a band member during the time of the first show we can now safely state the band started to perform as The Golden Earrings.

I also would like to mention Ruud Mols, a fellow Golden Earring researcher who has sent me many show details as well which he found on the internet while researching newspaper scans and databases. He shared the results with me and I wish to thank him for that as well. Bart van Alphen sent a lot of USA newspaper articles and ads. This information helped out in further completing the USA tour history! Thank you Bart! In 2018 this list can be enhanced with a big thank you to Tonny Steenhagen who helped out with a lot of information as well.

I am always looking for more materials.  If you have concert pictures, ticket stubs or tour advertisements, I really like to see them and use them for this site.  Please send material to webmaster Casper Roos (Golden Earring Research) - I can handle just about any kind of file attachment.  I do ask you a small favor if you send me something via email.  send me two emails.  One with the attachment and another letting me know you are sending it (that way I can check my spam software filters - frequently file attachment emails get killed and I need to rescue them).

If there are ever more tour dates announced, I will post them online.

Another special thanks goes to the Westend Drums website and Rob van der Werf for the The Golden Ear-rings info published on the Westend Drums website.

The first recording session was done in the old Phonogram Studio, a converted gym in the Honingstraat in Hilversum and took just one afternoon. Four songs were recorded on August 08 1965. (Please Go, Chunk Of Steel, Lonely Everyday and Not To Find). In fact George Kooymans and Rinus Gerritsen earlier on tried to record the song at the GTB-studio but they didn't had the 25 guilders needed for the recording! Please Go was chosen to be their first single, with Chunk Of Steel on the B-side. After the recording the band and especially George Kooymans begged the record company Polydor to record Please Go again with Frans Krassenburg on vocals, but Fred Haayen convinced them to release this version. To their minds the rendition of the song was far from being perfect, but apparently the public thought differently. Their first hit was a fact, partially due to the support from pirate radio station Veronica. Please Go became the first of an immense series of hitsingles. Some time later, they recorded another eight tracks in the same Hilversum studio again and their first album Just Ear-rings was ready to be launched.

AVRO TV recordings Unknown TV program Please Go performed, broadcast on unknown date in November 1965.

THE GOLDEN EARRINGS: "PLEACE GO"... In september maakten de Golden Earrings hun eerste plaat: "Please Go".

Leidsch Dagblad newspaper article November 02, 1965 Scheveningen krijgt groot Beat Casino

Scheveningen Casino Afternoon show, announced in PZC newspaper article November 03, 1965.

SCHEVENINGEN KRIJGT GROOT BEATCENTRUM.

Article Hitweek #19 January 11 1966 Earrings

Golden Earrings Just Ear-rings album promo ad

Scheveningen Casino Afternoon show.

Hitweek magazine 19 (January 20 1966) published a large article with an interview made at Scheveningen probably at this day. You find the article at the end of the 1965 tourdates overview. Here is the text: Ear-Rings.

Rinus is nogal stil. Alles verloopt uitstekend: Nobody but you, Now I have, Chunck of steel en nog vele andere songs. Bij No need to worry zakt het Oberbayern-zaaltje in het Palace-Hotel bijna de kelder in. Iedereen staat tegen het toneel gedrongen. Please go begint.

Gorinchem Stadsgehoorzaal De Nieuwe Doelen Good will dans avond met Radio Veronica floorshow on Sunday, with Trea Dobs, The Mounties, Rexis de Clown, show stopped after too "enthusiastic reactions" from some visitors. Newspaper article: Gerbra.

Dordrecht Busremise Nijverheidsstraat Session'66 Festival, with The Sharons, The Road Runners Sect, The Zipps, 1200 visitors, Dutch review, review Dordse Courant May 22, 1966: Haagse sterren toonden niet veel interesse DORDRECHT - Het armetierige Dordtse beatleven kreeg zondagmiddag een flinke duw in de goede richting. Sources: Casper's Golden Earring Research, internet review, confirmed show

Sas van Gent N.V. Spiegelglasfabriek Evening show 20 hr. Attendance 650 visitors.

De Stem newspaper May 23 1966 show review: Succesvol optreden "Golden Earrings".

The Golden Earrings show announcement August 21, 1966 Marum - Bar Dancing de Kruisweg

Marum Bar Dancing De Kruisweg Newspaper article:The Golden Earrings.

The Golden Earrings newspaper show review December 03, 1966 Utrecht - Tivoli-Sinjo Centrum

Utrecht Tivoli-Sinjo Centrum Evening show, Beatfestijn with The Golden Earrings, Last Boys and dansgroep Tropical Flowers.

Newspaper show review: Sinjo vierde tinejarig bestaan.

Part of newspaper article with info: The Golden Earrings.

Vlissingen Het Concertgebouw On that evening a 19 year old roadie crashed the new van (15.000 guilders) paid for by the money the band earned with the Coca-Cola single. Both the roadie and Rob Gerritsen were taken to the Bethesda hospital with injuries. Newspaper article Provinciale Zeeuwse Courant January 23, 1967 Twee Golden Earrings via boom in Bethesda.

(Note from Casper Roos: The vehicle mentioned was the brand new Mercedes band van which was bought from the proceedings of the Coca Cola promotion single. The persons injured were the 19 year old roadie "Paultje" en RG was Rinus older brother Rob Gerritsen. So no band members were involved in the accident!

The newspaper article also mentioned a Golden Earrings USA tour for March 1967. History tells us this first The Golden Earrings USA tour wasn't performed untill May 1969!

Groetjes, Lex Honigh.

Golden Earrings show ad Einighausen (Limburg) - Instuif Carna

Einighausen (Limburg) Instuif Carna Beathol Vleugels Evening show, support act So What, mode show in between bands.

Limburgs Dagblad newspaper article May 10 1967: EARRINGS NAAR EINIGHAUSEN.

Einighausen 10 mei.

In ′67 we had to perform in Maastricht before the Earring, but we arrived too late. By doing so the Earring had to play first. They didn′t like it one little bit. They didn′t even let us use their instruments. They said, we had to build our own system. Very childish. I mentioned this once to Barry who had just joined the band. We both laughed our heads off. Newspaper article: Golden Earrings maakten nieuwe langspeelplaat.

Op "Miracle Mirror" staan twaalf nummers: The truth about Arthur, Circus will be in town in time, Crystal heaven, Sam and Sue, I just lost somebody, Mr. Fortune's wife, Who cares, Born a second time, Magnificent magistral, Must I cry, Nothing can change this world of mine en Gipsy rhapsody.

Witte Paarden (Steenwijkerland) Dancing De Witte Paarden Newspaper show announcement, evening show 19.300 hr, show probably in Steenwijkerwold but not mentioned in newspaper article.

Fan made Paris show review.

Paris (France) Olympia Date mentioned by Billboard magazine show .

Albino Moon website reported about the tv recordings: French TV Show called "Dim Dam Dom" (unconfirmed) should have recorded about twenty minutes of the Golden Earrings show (performing for headliner The Equals) but it remains unsure whether the recordings were made and if so if they are broadcasted.

The Golden Earring Leersum - Het Hof show review De Kaap newspaper January 16 1969

Leersum Het Hof Beatclub "De Weerwolf", attendance 600 visitors were only 300 were allowed due to fire regulations. De Kaap newspaper January 16 1969 mentioned the venue was overcrowded and the police had to refuse at least 100 fans an entry into the building and reported this to the mayor as well as the fact there were complaints about the concert sound level. A few days after the concert the local government decided the venue had to close on March 09, 1969 after a scheduled concert by The Free. But several weeks later the venue was re-opened on April 30, 1969 but with the restriction of a maximum of 350 visitors during an event.

Show review De Kaap newspaper January 16 1969: Beatavond trok veel belangstelling.

Fleetwood Mac speelde o.a. Albatros. Shoes, Tee-Set, Blue Diamonds, Motions, Dizzy Mens Band, After Tea, Cats etc. etc. Mooi einde altijd. Golden Earring show info March 03, 1969 Almelo - Venue unknown

Almelo Unknown venue Evening show. This The Golden Earrings show was mentioned in a newspaper article but didn't reveal the venue name. In the same article was mentioned that at this Maasstricht show Freddie Haayen signed the contract that The Golden Earring would perform in the British tv show Colour Me Pop later that year. This was a milestone. Never before a Dutch band was seen on British television according to the article. During this not yet confirmed probably March 23 1969 performance in Almelo manager Fred Haayen signed the contract with the manager of the well known English BBC tv pop-show Colour me Pop to perform at that prestigious show on September 09 1969.

De single Just A Little Bit Of Peace In My Heart is in Engeland deze week uitgebracht op het label Major Minor.

Ambitious as he was The Golden Earring manager Freddie Haayen wanted to go the USA with the band. So in 1969 Golden Earring visited the United States for the first time. playing, as openers for Delaney, Bonnie and Friends (featuring guitarist Eric Clapton!). Shows for their first tour were done for example at both Fillmore's, The Scene - New York, Grande Ballroom - Detroit (on May 16, 17, 18 and 19, 1969) and Unganos - New York. The Golden Earring was about to go to The United States to witness the music scene on the other side of the ocean. The band should have left the national Schiphol Airport in Amsterdam on April 18, 1969 but the needed working permits weren't available in time. But after two weeks waiting (and hiding at the Red Bullet office in Hilversum) in Holland the permits were there and the band left on May 02, 1969 for America. They arrived on May 03, 1969 and stayed at the Wellington hotel in Manhattan (New York). But when they arrived there were no shows booked as Freddie Haayen thought he could arrange that when in New York. But there was no demand for the band. When they finally met road manager Bob Lampert with good contacts, some shows were booked. They played the wellknown club The Scene in New York and while they were there Jimi Hendrix was playing as well. But in "Ungano's" they performed for an almost empty venue!

April 1969 fan club letter about departure for first USA tour on April 24 1969

April 25 1969 De Vrije Zeeuw newspaper article: Amerika weigert de Golden Earrings toe te laten

Amsterdam Schiphol Planned departure at 14.45 hr for the first The Golden Earrings USA tour but postponed due to the fact the needed working permits weren't available in time. Only producer and manager Freddie Haayen boarded the Pan American airplane to go ahead and arrange a new departure date. The Golden Earrings give a press conference at 13 hr. in advance. In a letter sent by the fanclub fans were asked to come to the Schiphol Airport to greet the band before their departure.

April 1969 Fanclub letter scan thanks to Cees van Rutten, long time serving fan!

Golden Earring show review in Ann Arbor Sun:

SUN RA SUN RA By Ken Dabish, ye olde editor. After Led Zeppelin's expected shitty performance on Friday the fifteenth of this month at the Grandeous Ballroom, the remainder of the weekend's bill just had to be better. I never expected anything like what went down Saturday and Sunday. I had some vague idea of what to expect from Sun Ra from listening to various albums but I had never before caught them live. WOW!!!!!!

Brother Wayne Kramer had informed me that "Brother Ra is hip to it all," and I found out "it's true!" when I saw it all. Ra, who was on before the MC5 and after Cartoone and the Golden Earring paralyzed an unsuspecting audience who had come to the Grande to spend money and stay alive with the MC5. They had no kind of idea what Sun Ra was all about but they all walked out of the clip joint with some kind of glassy look on their faces and it wasn’t the acid. Sun Ra literally mesmerized the kids. Me too.

The Cartoone played killer sets both nights, satisfying the audience who expected just another British Group. All of the dudes really bopped on stage while playing.

The Golden Earring, from Holland, sounded a lot like The Byrds musically; vocals were good, nothing like I had ever heard before. G.E. freaked the audience by playing The Byrds Eight Miles High in a truly killer fashion and I even enjoyed it (I have a bad habit of not enjoying another group's adaption of an original-type-hype). The great thing about Saturday and Sunday was that the people were really happy. Probably 'cause it only cost the kids US$ 3.50 instead of the usual 4.50 Gibb and Glantz charge for one Group. GET DOWN!!!!!!!!

Info by e-mail Jim Roup Hello, Thank you for your information! A writer is doing a story on the Hollywood club called Thee Experience. As an 18 year old kid I got in one night (under age, it was an over 21 club) to see the great bluesman John Lee Hooker. Now I know it was May 29, 1969. Also on the bill was the great slide player Earl Hooker. Opening the show was a new band called Golden Earring! The rest is history! Thanks again, Regards, Jim Roup from Studio City (California, USA)

Amsterdam Schiphol Airport The Golden Earrings returned at Schiphol Airport from their first USA tour. The band was presented a brand new Mercedes van which would serve as a tourbus for band and equipment from then on. Long time serving van Cees van Rutten was present way back then. He still has several pictures from him together with bandmembers George Kooymans and Rinus Gerritsen. (Cees van Rutten is the author of the book Earringgek and can be seen on the left side of the upper two photo's age 17 at the time)

Cees van Rutten wrote me an e-mail about his adventures way back then at the end of June 1969: Hallo Casper, Ik ging die dag al vroeg in de ochtend op de brommer naar Schiphol. Leuke dag gehad in elk geval. Met vriendelijke groet, Cees.

Ann Arbor Sun show review for May 1969 Grande Ballroom shows

For fans who want to explore the shows Golden Earring gave in the United States I can recommend the book Golden Earring De Amerikaanse Droom by authors Jeroen Ras and Robert Haagsma. This book in Dutch gives you an insight what happened during the ten Golden Earring USA tours. The first print of the book was released in 2012 and a second print with several updates and corrections came out in 2013. All shows listed in the book are marked with the photo of this book below every USA tour date in the Golden Earring tour dates listing on this Golden Earring research website.

The band now performs under the name The Golden Earring. The initial s behind the band name was dropped after they returned from their first USA tour. An article in the Haagsche Courant newspaper dated June 27 1969 mentioned this fact as well as the standing ovations in the Fillmore West and The Village Gate venues.

The Golden Earrings! Ze hadden net een nieuwe single gemaakt, namelijk That Day.

Where Will I Be, was op dat moment hun hit, maar ook de "achterkant" It's Allright, But I Admit It Could Be Better, was eigenlijk voor mij de echte hit.

Ferry Visser, October 2008.

Colour Me Pop, BBC tv show (UK) - It's Allright, But I Admit It Could Be Better live, recordings made for the Eight Miles High TV documentary during this UK BBC tv-show performance. During a so far unknown 1969 performance in Almelo manager Fred Haayen signed the contract with the manager of the well known English tv pop-show Colour me Pop to perform.

Note Casper Roos: The band didn't leave for the United States on September 25 as mentioned in the article. Their second USA tour started in december 1969.

Boskoop 't Fetertje Support act Earth and Fire.

Groet van Earring fan Dik Wolthers (Note webmaster Casper Roos: Dik mentioned 1968 but probably refers to this date October 18, 1969)

Original show and backstage photo's supplied by Lauri Honig (The after show photo's were actually made in the dressing room made her first Golden Earring concert ever!) Thank you Lauri Honig!

Newspaper article Leeuwarder Courant November 10 1969: Podium van Steenwijker dancing te klein: GOLDEN EARRING WEIGERDE OP TE TREDEN.

Steenwijk Wapen van Steenwijk Show cancelled due to a too small stage of about three by four meters while the contract stated four by eight meters, 700 visitors expected.

Date unknown, 1969 or 1970 London (UK) Probably at the Revolution Club located at Bruton Place, Mayfair While searching on the internet for the never ending tourdates quest I came across a message on the official Golden Earring website. Here is the message: "On 26 Feb 2009 @ 20:02 Shaun Skelly said: Hi Guys. I used to work for Major Minor records as a plugger in 1969/70. For some reason we released 8 Miles High in England, rather than Polydor. I think it sold about 5 copies, thanks to my lousy plugging! You did a 'showcase' gig at ?the Revolution club, which I recall fondly as I think I was the only person from the record company who stayed for the whole gig, the rest couldn't stand the noise! Looking forward to seeing you at the Empire next month - I'd like to think you'll play 'Vince Taylor'... regards Shaun"

I'm now wondering: does anyone know more about this show? Date and so on? If so let me know by e-mail please! Greetings, Casper

Shaun sent me a second email with additional info: ----- Original Message ----- From: Shaun Skelly To: casper.roos@ziggo.nl Sent: Monday, March 09, 2009 1:52 PM Subject: London 1970 Hi Casper, It was a long time ago when I worked for Major Minor from November 1969 to August 1970, so I can only assume it would have been in that period. I think the gig was at the Revolution Club, Bruton Place, Mayfair and if my memory is right it was a daytime event, or maybe early evening. Sorry I can′t be more specific, I used to go to a lot of gigs for our label and also with friends who were pluggers from other labels to see ′their′ bands as well, so it all blurs together! Regards, Shaun

Toronto (Canada) Hawk's Nest 3 shows at the Hawk's Nest in Toronto probably performed on January 23, 24, 25 1970 according to book Golden Earring de Amerikaanse Droom page 260. In January 2014 I received newspaper scans which mentioned Golden Earring performed shows in Seattle on January 23 and 24 1970 therefor the show dates for the Hawk's Nest shows became unclear. However Golden Earring has performed at Toronto at the Hawk's Nest as the authors already mentioned these shows are based on evidence as photographer Hugh Crymble mentioned he photographed the band and the Tribal Village had a show review.

We now know the actual Hawk's Nest show dates were on December 26-27-28 1969. Evidence was found in a newspaper concert listing.

In 1969 Golden Earring performed three evening concerts in a row on December 26-27-28, 1969 at the Hawk's Nest Club upstairs at le Coq d'Or Tavern in Toronto. The venue was located at 331 Yonge Street (on the east side of Yonge Street, just north of Dundas Street) and is since 2011 the site of the HMV shop. These shows were their first ever appearances in Canada. Having proven a popular attraction at Le Coq D'Or, artist Ronnie Hawkins made a deal with its owners: in exchange for free use of the building's third floor (which ended up housing an office, gym, and after hours parties), he would run an all-ages club on the second floor. The Hawk's Nest proved a blessing for music fans too young to go into the other venues along the Yonge Street strip. Golden Earring is part of it's history.

Special thanks to Golden Earring fan Bart van Alphen for your help in finding the actual show dates and newspaper scans!
